Sorry Warren! Sometimes a Q comes along and ya get no answers but a load of views of it - I had a query only a month ago & I don't think anyone gave a response... *sniff* But by & large I've had nowt but help forom everyone so don't judge too harshly just yet!

I think there was a thread recently that covered most of what you are looking for...

I suppose which alloy you select is entirely down to personal taste - they're all fine wheels.

If you're a club member this months Straight 6 mag has all the info on tyre sizes - if you're 205/60 16" at the mo (I'm guessing) then a safe bet is 215/40 17" and 225/40 18"- 235/40s will mean that the diameter will be slightly larger and so will alter your gearing slightly. I'm only guessing as I've an E34 but that size should fit into the wheel well at a squeeze with height being as much an issue as diameter.

well, that's my 2 cents! Anyone else car to add to it?

p.s. Usually the set of wheels will come with studs to suit, so I wouldn't worry about re-using the originals - keep a set in the car for the spare wheel though if you only buy 4 wheels.

E39 uses exactly the same tyre sizes as the E34 so 235 40 18 would be perfect or even 245 40 18 would be fine, it is quiet common to fit 19" wheels to a E39 in which case you would need 245 35 19 Tyres. You could also go for a wider rear wheel 9" or 10" in which case you would need a 255/35/18 265/35/18 or 275/30/18 Check Here for a usefull tyre size calculator, you can put your original tyre size in and work out the appropriate tyre size for a larger wheel.
