You can use an alloy wheel cleaner - but this is not advised to be used often as it can start to damage the paint.
I bought a wheel brush - Its like a wire hoop with black brisles and a red handle - I tested to see how soft they were before I got it - don't want scratches.

If the wheels really won't come up nice, use a cleaner then wax them every 3-6 months and the brake dust won't stick as stubbornly.

i use stuff called wonder wheels, use a paint brush on, then hose off, it does an amazing job (also good on the motorbike).
Also if you take the time to properly wax the wheels it'll save hassle later.
Other idea is some silicone dash spray, works the same as wax.

I met a chap last wek at hestercombe, he had an immaculate E34 520i with the original X spoke wheels.

He uses Mr Muscle Oven cleaner !

I havent tried this yet, but I'm going too, he reckons its much much better than wonder wheels.

Best Wishes

Nigel

And probably alot more caustic than wonder wheels!
My own preference is regular washing with warm water and car shampoo, using a sponge and a cloth to get into all areas. A pain, but gets most off.
Oh, and not overdoing it with the brakes

Have used Mr Muscle Orange cleaner and it cleans the wheels really well and leaves a lovely orangy smell too  , it's a spray so gets everywhere. Wonder wheels burns your skin(caustic?), Mr Muscle doesn't??

A quick spray 10 minutes before you jet wash/hose and the dirt falls off.

My pal had really badly stained alloys and it brought them up really well too.

A Spray!!!! is the Biz, none of this Brush stuff, to flick the cleaner All around the calipers ++, if you had to clean Alpina wheels for 20+ years, you know that Brush cleaning is a NO.The write ups for brushing on, show How much the journo Knows about wheels!!!!!!

Have used Halford Spray alloy cleaner for years, and tried a New Turtle wax Wheel Spray cleaner, both quick n easy , good value,  and doesnt damage my wheels.I wonder How many new wheel buyers Ever think about the time req to clean their choice of rims???

If you use Mr Muscle oven cleaner (orange is ok) on your alloys and the laquer/powder coating is chipped or broken the strong alkali (caustic) will break down the aluminium/magnesium your wheels are made from. Wonder wheels is acid based which does not affect the material the wheels are made from although it does quickly wreck centre cap badges etc. Spray some oven cleaner on some kitchen foil and see how it etches the surface if you dont believe me.

I use fairy foam spray on my alloys. Spray it on let it foam up and eat at the brake dust and then hose it off afterwards. I havent noticed any issues with peeling paint or bubbling so i can but presume its not that caustic.

OK you are all going to laugh at this (so did I till I tried it however) Babywipes, YIP babywipes. it will not remove the yellowed burnt into the laquer stuff but brakedust melts away (God knows what my daughters A*** will be like though!)
It is also great for cleaning any engine components plastics windows etc, plus its cheap, just,,,,get the missus to buy them,,,, LMAO
