Topic: handling Posted: 11-July-2004 at 16:11 |
there arent any massive problems with my 6er's performance and handling, but being nearly 2 ton and 18 yrs old means there is quite alot of body roll when im going around corners.
has anyone adressed this issue with their motor? i was thinking of fitting some stiffer springs, i found a set of apex ones for 90 quid

-you and all your gubbins would have to weigh 1/2 ton in order to get the all-up weight that high!
-if you have a lot of body roll, check out your anti-roll bars first. If these are in poor shape you will get a lot of roll.
-the possibilities for changing stuff are endless.
-point #1 tho is that any changes are pretty much a waste of time if your suspension mounting rubbers, ball joints etc are shot to bits, so make sure these are OK first. Otherwise you might just end up with a worse problem.
-if your dampers are OK then a set of lowering springs is a cheap (-ish, you still have to fit them) first step.
-if your dampers are shot then you might as well change those at the same time.
-you can go the whole hog and fit M635CSi suspension, but this will involve welding on new anti-roll bar mountings, as they are different.
I'd suggest trying out another modified '6' or an E28 five series before doing anything though.
cheers

i got the weight from a plate in the engine bay which says it is 1800kg ish, im about a hundred so i reckon the all up weight might be not far off 2 tonnes.
any hoo, i will deffo check the bushes first.
im pretty confident i can change the springs myself (by myself i mean my mate will do it)
i was just wondering if anyone had done the job already

-1800kg is the maximum recommended laden weight, i.e. with all passengers and luggage.
-your 628 actually has a kerbside weight of ~1450kg (some 250kg lighter than the new '6' series despite its fancy lightweight materials).
-I'm sure lots of people have lowered etc; I've looked into it, but have not done it myself.
cheers

I've changed the entire suspension on mine front and back including the front spring struts (Very expensive). Its not all that hard if you have some good kit (Jacks etc) but you need space and it is time consuming. I got rid of my lowered springs as all the kerbs round here seem to be about 2 feet high and the spoiler has suffered because of it. I have the M635 front anti roll bar to fit when I get round to welding on some new brackets!

You can fit 25/18mm M5 E28 roll bars but you will need to fit the brackets to the chassis at the front.
M6 roll bars were 19mm/16mm for some reason.
Other mods would be to fit slightly offset top mounts (30 mins I recall) which will improve turn in - these are available from BMW. Strut brace helps alot in the corners I have found. (Sparco aluminium for E28 - £120 from Demon Tweeks but I may have had the last one)
750 control arm bush mod prevents brake shimmy - £43 each but they need to be milled to 50mm before fitting.
Other than that it shocks/dampers and all the bushes and ball joints.
Best of luck with it.

finally got the new springs fitted and i cant believe the difference!!
the car feels totally different (in a good way) its alot more sure-footed, corners more steadily, the acceleration feels more responsive and braking feels alot sharper.
it also seems to steer more accurately so im a v happy bunny and all for £200 fitted

As has probably been previously mentioned the most significant improvement i made to my M6 was the fitment of 25mm e28 m5 front anti roll bar [the mounting bracket plates need to be welded to the chassis legs for a proper job] and the 18mm rear bar from the highline. Hopefully if my thumbnail pic works this was accelerating full pelt round a 180 hairpin, that linked with your fitted springs should create a reasonable set up , ideally matched uprated shocks with your springs would be good, it is also possible to obtain negative camber top mounts, sadly i wasnt able to carry this outbefore i sold the car.

18mm rear bar is not available currently from BMW. Mine is on back order pending BMW Germany sourcing a different supplier. I have been informed that it will be supplied ----- eventually. I'll post if I get anything soon.
Does anyone know of another supplier for an 18 or 19mm rear anti-roll bar? Alpina?

Does the 25mm front bar from the E28 M5 need brackets welding on to allow fitting to an M635CSi or just different bushes in the existing brackets?

M635 bars are 19mm front (they are on mine anyway). I suspect that the later ones might be 25mm front as the highlines were suppossed to be 18mm rears and you would need 25mm fronts with 18mm rears.
M5 fronts are 25mm but only on the later ones. I had to go for a 1987 car to get the parts CD to pick up a 25mm bar.
If you have anything less than 25mm bars on your 6 series (highly likely) then the fronts will come with the puny spider like brackets that are practically tack welded onto the chassis legs. Apparently you can get 25mm bushes to fit these brackets but I would STRONGLY recommend that you do not run a 25mm front bar with these brackets. The increase in applied force and stiffness when using the 25mm bar vs the 19mm bar is HUGE. Hence why M5's are fitted with the correct brackets. Can't imagine what would happen if you were in a tight bend applying full power coming out of it and one the brackets was to let go.
The M5 brackets are MUCH bigger than the originals and only cost £4.50 each. They are about 2mm thick where there get welded on and the surface weld is bigger than the originals.
I also wouldn't change the front to 25mm and leave the rear as is. This would promote too much understeer but it depends what handling characteristics you are after.
Cheers
PS _ Dinan do a rear bar - 19mm for $224 - great!!!!!. 18mm BMW bar is £65!
