How do I locate it?

Its not on any documentation I have and the insurers are insisting they have it.

Thanks

Mark,
It's right at the back of the block where the gearbox bolts to the engine.
Look down from the rear of the head and it should be facing you, thought you might have to bend the odd pipe out the way to see it.

above the starter motor
BTW I haven't got one as my block was new bought at BMW.
Will this cause trouble for the future?

Cheers, managed to locate it.

Uwe, I doubt it, mine is because I declared the modifications of Evo Sport wheels and spoilers in case of any problems, I had to complete a modified vehicle report and this is where they require the engine #

It should obviously be on the V5 as well but I guess the place with a large barn couldn't be bothered to record it when it was imported. I will add it for completeness.

I found a bit about this on the Koala CD, so is there a way I can check my engine number is correct? its seems a bit odd as it says the last 3 digits are production date using the Julian date, but 3 numbers is much too short for a julian date, I don't get it.

From Koala:

The first number of the first group is the engine ID. 6 = S14
Next 3 numbers represent a unique serial number
First number of the second group is the plant code. 0 - 4 for Munich , 5 - 9 for Steyr
The last 3 numbers of the second group are the production day (Julian date).

This seems OK but my first 4 numbers are 6001, so S14 lump and then 001 as a 'unique' number? then 4 for Munich and then 3 numbers for the Julian date.

Uwe, Koala says this for new/remanufactured engines:

The first 4 numbers are a sequential serial number
Next is code A for remanufactured, or N for new engine.
Next two are month, last digit is the last digit of the year.

So you should have this?

Mags
