hi miles if only 0.1 between the two and a belive that to be true. how does a 2.5 sport with the same bmw mods  as a 535 sport  over an se have a 1.1 faster time that would make a 525 sport as quick as a 535 with 19 more bhp an close to 1000 more cc i have read by R.M.CLARKE that a 525sport has

189bhp@5900rpm

torque 181 lb-ft@4700

0-60mph=8.5/se=8.6

if as you say a 525 sport as a 0-60 time of 7.4 and i can not find  that figure quoted in any of my books/mags  it would put a 525i sport on par with a 535 sei and only 0.1 sec behind a 535i sport and also only 1 second  behind a 3.6 m5 and i must say i find that a bit hard to belive as i know on the road a 2.5 sport does not keep up with 3.5sport like wise my 3.5 is no match for a 3.6 m5

My owners manual says that the 24v 525 is 192Bhp and 181 lb.ft...The 535 is 211Bhp and 225lb.ft

0-62 times for manual 525Se and 535se are 8.6sec and 7.7sec

It also says that the 535 is heavier than the 525

I didn't say that the figures i gave in my original post were accurate they were taken from a 525 sport owners webpage ?????

I would imagine that with my performance chip (with claimed gains of 20Bhp and 15nM) my car should be quicker than a 535 ?

Having owned a 3.8 M5 i can say that the 525 definitely seems to pick up better at lower revs, the M5's power didn't really kick in until around 4000Rpm. But it was obviously still quicker with 340Bhp

hi miles i am talking about standard cars  you say you feel your 525 will out perform a 535 although i think that doubtful dont forget a 535 can be chipped also. As mine is   Big Smile

as for being heavier the curb weight of a 525 is approx 3485

                                                                  535 is approx 3533

not really a lot in it.

but getting back to my Q,BMW tell me that in real terms there is no performance advantage between any BMW badged se/sport with equal cc

I thought the performance figures for the 525se and 525sport were the same. If there is a difference it could be because the SE figures refer to an auto box and the sport a manual. If someone is claiming that a 525 sport manual is 1.1 seconds faster to 60 than an SE manual then I don't believe them!

Mmmmmmm why has the sport got a different gearbox and differential then ? With different ratios ? The 525 Sport i currently own is much quicker than the Manual 525Se i used to own, the gears are a lot shorter and it tops out at around 125mph (you run out of revs) whereas the 525se would go on to about 140.

I know that there is no difference in performance with the automatic models of 525se and 525sport.

It's a possibility i suppose ? But other 525 sport owners have commented on how short 1st and 2nd gear are ?

Andy where are you getting your information from ?

Ok fair enough, but why do the gears seem much shorter ? Are there any other 525 Sport owners that have driven a standard 525 Manual or vice versa who would like to comment ?

1st and poss 2nd may well be but even if that is the case and i do not think it is, top speed of your car would still be the same as any other 525 not 20ish mph slower if your sport can only reach 125mph chip or no chip its not up par some thing some were is wrong...

Perhaps someone has put a different gearbox or differential in my car then as there is no way i would be doing 128 in 5th gear at 5500 RPM ? Although i have no record of the gearbox or differential being changed (i have full BMW service history with all receipts since new)

I have had my car at 130mph, it got there quickly and felt like it had lots more to go.
