bit late on this one.. but the triple sidedraught idea sounds sexy to me.
You know they are going to look the part.. they will give a fantastic induction noise as well. They will also give you that instant throttle snap that powerful carbed engines are famous for.
Like the other guy said.. it is all reversible if you ever wanted to put the original injection back on and you will get most of your cash back of you ever sell the carbs.
Setting them up is easy..and they will be reliable.. no more electrical gremlins to worry about.. fuel economy will be a little worse as will bottom end tractability and part throttle progression.. but you will still get all of the power and maybe some more.

I personally would go for it.. we are doing an old 316 up for trackdays at the moment.. and the carb of choice is of course the good 'ol twin 40 setup.. you can't beat it.

Coming in a bit late here, but would like to put a few things in perspective. Alpina and Schnitzer started off in 1969 with the 2800CS, which did not have fuel injection. That did not come in until 1971 on the road cars. By that time the racers had indeed triple carbs. The D-Jetronic fuel injection was not suitable for racing however and BMW, Schnitzer and later Alpina used the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system. The early Jetronic system has only the fuel pressure variable, modern systems are much better programmable. A had a CSL and raced it for a while with triple Webers and it worked great. The problem for racing is always the rules and many (historical) series including the Kumho Championship state that only period features are permitted, so you cannot fit a more modern Motronic system on a CSL. For a road or track-car that does of course make no difference.
Secondly the 24-valve head of an M6 will not fit under the bonnet of an E9 coupe unless you modify the shape of the bonnet. Becuase the engine is slanted on a 30 degree angle the head is simply too high. In pictures of racing CSL's of 1974 and 1975 you see a 24-valve head, because the engine is fitted upright and has a dry sump system, like in the M1. The M6 engine is again fitted on an angle and will otherwise drop straight into the engine bay.

I have a mechanic in Hastings where I live who is a wizkid with BMW engines, phone Ian Mepham on 01424 200825.
Gus van Riessen.

Did you ever get to the bottom of the starting problems ? If not I have an Idea.......

Drive over to mine and we will start swaping parts of my CSL on to your CSL till we find the problem, or do a ecu swap for a week and see if this sorts it out.

all the best

I might be right of track with this one, its morew of a thought than a statement,

The bmw csl has elecronic fuel injection and the differance between a new fuel injection  on a mecanical side is very litle. I think most of the changes are with the electronics, eg lamba probes, TDC sensers, Knock sensers ect ect so why not start with the ECU first. Can it be replaced with a better one ? can it be reprogramed ? can it be replaced with a beter reprogramed one ?

Just a thought as with most fuel injected cars the first thing these young wipper snapers do in there M3`s and Merc CDI`s is to change the chip, or is this not possible ?

all the best
