I think every car is different, I,ve had my 1988 530i SE for 11 years now. Its done 261k and still drives better than most other newer cars that i have availability to. I never use the main dealer now, either doing the work required myself or a friend does it (who is a qualified mechanic). I do suffer from the e34 overheating syndrome but im sure i need to replace my fan clutch, but the overheating only occurs if the car is left standing with the engine running. I know it can be uncomfortable but if i put the heater on full and the fan on full it draws the heat away from the engine and brings the temp down to an acceptable level until i can get moving again.

I love this car and would certainly consider another, possibley the m5 version

I had a 1990 Honda civic 1.6i16 and I thrashed the hell out of it for about two years. By the time I got rid of it the body was starting to rust but mechanically the car was still spot on. In my opinion the Honda was a lot better built than my BMW. The interior never made a single squeak or rattle, unlike my BMW and I never had to change a single suspension component. As I have said before the BMW is better to drive and look at but it is not as well built as I was expecting

Oh and with regard to service history, when your talking about new cars still under warranty most people will take them to the main dealer. When thinking about how good and reliable a car is going to be I would include in that the level of service given by the dealer. After all whats the point in having a really well built car if the quality is going to be undermined by poor servicing.

Again I must stress that I am not trying to put people off buying BMWs, but I wouldn't buy one because they are well built. Also I am not talking about older BMWs either as the fall of in quality appears to be a more recent occurance.

Entering an age of Austerity and now driving a Focus Diesel.
