My father in law is considering buying an 840Ci sport, 97, 34k miles, FBMWSH, from a decent dealer. I'm an E36 M3 Evo man myself and ignorant on 8s - is there anything he should know about these cars pre-buying - any tips or suggestions much appreciated! Thanks |

Errm, make sure he's established a trust fund to cover the various bills that an Eight can incur...

Horsetan, thanks, you're not the first to say this! Do you speak out of experience of Eights? I heard the 840Ci with the 4.4 V8 was the most 'normal' of all of them to run - no worse than a 740i for example. Is this not true??

It's all the electric bells and whistles, plus the electronics thrown in! There has never been a generally available workshop manual for the E31 Eight, because BMW didn't want any Tom Dick or Harriet doing a DIY repair on their flagship car. Many reviews say that the 840Ci is the most manageable of the lot (and there were only three in the range anyway), but there is no way I could afford to run any Eight. ...so I have a 1983 E24 635CSi Auto instead.... |

Best advice; take it to a BMW main dealer and explain that you're buying it. Pay for an hour of their time to go through it. Check the aircon blows ice cold, check the seats for proper backrest operation (lifting the lever and tilting forward - the internal mechanism breaks).
I had one the same as yours in Orient blue; but only as a toy. Everyday use is for rich fellows indeed. |

The 840 Ci Sport is definitely the right one to get. It has the 4.4l V8 which does not have the Nikasil problem of the earlier 4.0l V8 and slightly less complex than the V12. Also has all the M-tech bodywork and mirrors. You get a little less power than the 850 but it really does not matter (the points add up just as quickly!) I got the Rac to inspect mine (bought last Sept, also 97R, but 64k miles). Don't buy it if any of the electrical bits don't work (and there are many of them). It isn't cheap to run with a >£50 tank fill. I have been towed twice for basically the same problem (a blown heater valve, and subsequent blow out of a weakened heater pipe). Loading onto a low-loader can be a problem as the skirts have very low-ground clearance. When the sensors go haywire (once in 6 months - oddly enough the temperature sensor went sour), then even BMW dealers have problems diagnosing them, although any good independent can do the servicing. I bought a Peake Research R5/FCX-II Code/reset tool of my own as some garages do not have 8 series on their diagnostic systems (I am also a gadget freak so this satisfied other urges). Despite a few problems, I do not regret buying the car at all - it is fabulous and made even my dearly beloved 635 I traded in seem like a smelly old boneshaking penny farthing. |

I bought mine from a main dealer, a one owner car with 60k and full dealer history. Even so, it had a full aircon rebuild, front dampers, seat release cable, the two batteries, cam position sensor and a couple of other bits under warranty; would have been £2500 worth. One broken coil spring meant I could fit a set of Schnitzer lowered springs under warranty and have Sport gas dampers to replace the originals though!
The worst part of owning the car was selling it. The idiot with the knackered E36 who REALLY wanted it and then decided at the last moment he didn't want blue will haunt me forever. The along came a mate of a mate who bought it on the spot after looking at various clocked/dodgy history cars including the car E36 matey eventually bought (there is a God!). It's a buyer's market for 8 Series so be fussy. |

Hi Stubble, Assuming it passes its pre purchase inspection buy it! 840Ci's are reliable and folklore that says they cost a bucket load to run is a tad exagerated. No more to run than an M3 in my opinion (fuel excluded!). I just did a 5000km round trip in mine and it didn't miss a beat. Research available at http://www.clube31.com/forum/ and http://www.e31faq.com/ And its a nice car to drive, its considerate - it put the windows up for you over 160kmh to reduce drag. Good luck. Ian
