hi kenny all i can tell you is that the m52 relates to the 2.0/ 2.5/2.8 engines all of which are 24 v as for a m52tu??? i have never heard of one but perhaps some one else may be able to help you as there are alot of knowledgable people on this site.

The M52 is Single Vanos and the M52TU is Double Vanos, the M52/M52TU engines were fitted to later E36 models, the E38 728 and E39's.

How do you know if it is a TU double vanos or single as specs don't show any differences in power outputs. The only difference I've found is the later 328s (Got a 97 328 sport and 99 Z3 2.8) is the peak torque is 500rpm lower, surely double vanos would make more power rather than just reducing the peak torque engine speed.

Was it in 99 when it went to TU as the Z3 has square shaped inlet branches and a more round chain cover - looks basically like the 330 engine.

Maybe I'm over simplifying it, but is the TU not just the update from Nikasil to Steel liners that occurred from week 10 production of '98?
Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Correct. The TU means that it is a non Nikasil block. All the dual Vanos engines have steel liners, so they are all TU.

Didn't realize that there was also a change to dual Vanos at the same time as the block change.  Always assumed that that change didn't happen until the M54, since there was no power difference between M52 and M52TU engines.

Is there a visual clue with the M52 then to indicate if it is an M52 or TU?  Also, if M52 engines have been replaced due to Nikasil, did the replacements continue with the single Vanos or were they updated to dual?  Lastly, are there any known issues with the dual Vanos in these similar to those on the e36 M3 Evo?

Sorry for all the questions, but I thought I knew my M52's from my M54's!
