Hi All,

Having recently purchased an E39 530 (2001) model, it has Sat Nav but came with no disk. I purchased the latest BMW Road map Europe 2004-2 DVD via E-bay. unfortuntely when I put the disk in it doesn't recognise it and just spits it out.

I believe the disk to be original as it came fully sealed with all the right paperwork and licience agreement. Reading the sellers feedback on ebay numerous people have bought the same item and had left good feedback.

I also tried a disk from a friends porche that also uses Navteq disks, the same result.

Is this disk too new for my system? Or is the system probably faulty?

Thanks inadvance

Keith

Is the system in your 2001 model CD-ROM or DVD-ROM based ? As i know that the 2001 E46 3 Series still used CD-ROM based discs....

Hi Miles,

Good question and I think have probably solved my problem, I didn't know there was a CD-ROM version. How would I tell which one it is?

The numbers on the unit are:

Philips

65.90 -6 915 035

22sy591/23b

9022 015 93231

If the system has the widescreen monitor it is the DVD version if not it is the CD-ROM version.

Does the drive look like this ? :

It seems that i was wrong...The first widescreen navi systems were CD-ROM based. It might be best to pop in to your local BMW dealer just to confirm which system you have.

Hi Miles

No it looks like this

I believe it is the mark 3.

I will go to the dealer and find out more, but think your guess about it being CD-rom and not DVD are probably right.

Thanks for your help

Keith

I have the E39 2002 530da. Same problem.. went to the garage and got the latest Europe DVD only to have it spat out....

I had to buy the CD-ROM disk, which cost €120 in Paris. Problem is that if you want the full set of CD-ROMs you will have to pay upwards to €650 (from BMW), and then update those essential each year. I did not buy the set. One day I will manage not to get lost navigating the damn ring roads of Antwerp.

The High Detail Europe DVD was ~€400 from BMW, which is significantly better and saves having to stop and change disks whenever you cross a frontier.

I asked wether there was an upgrade available from CD to DVD (player only)...  waiting to hear. Anyone else know?

James

Thanks James,

I asked the same question today, the answer is yes, but it will cost about £1000-£1500 from BMW. Looking on ebay you could get the units considerably cheaper, just not sure how easy it would be to fit.

I think I will stick with my CD unit and just get the UK and France CD's.

thanks again

K.

According to This site it is possible to upgrade from the MKIII CD-ROM based system to the MKIV DVD-ROM based version by simply swapping the navigation computer/drive unit.

It talks about a software key being needed for the MKIII, knowing my luck I will be at the the SW rev that needs it. I am sure I will find it.

the easiest way to tell is that if its dvd based it will say DVD rom as a logo on the front of the navcomputer. I know of problems where people have dvd films into these disks only to get the disk stuck in the machine and requiring new computer to rectify it.
