A question for the forum

The coolant level sensor on my 535iA has been showing a fault went into Morrisons at Kirkcaldy on Saturday to have it replaced. Found out they had ordered the wrong sensor (seems there's 2 on an 2000 E39) and did I want to leave it with them till today or have it put back together and book another date. Since there seemed to be no problem with the level (they checked it the week before) I asked them to re-assemble and I'll bring the car back later in the month.

After having to do an emergency dash home this afternoon from work - steam etc pouring out  underneath the bonnet once I'd got onto the drive. Temp gauge hadn't moved from it's normal middle of the gauge either going to work or coming home, decided to headback to work 3 miles along the road and you'd think I was running a steam engine

Limped back to the nearest BP garage just verging on the red put in 2.5 litres of anti-freeze and the balance in water and limped the last mile back to the house.

Phoned the AA and a very nice man came out and advised that the radiator had split and he'd arrange for the car to be trailered back to the BMW garage tomorrow - in the meantime mad dash to hire a car so I can get to work tomorrow (1 weeks car hire lighter !)

The question is would an air lock cause this amount of damage ? since I drove it home on saturday without a problem and do I have any recourse with the garage for the radiator bursting ?

Or has anyone else had a similar problem and it's just down to old age ? or bad luck

Cheers !
