Does quality of the oil filter matter?  Why?

Yes, the better the quality the more debri that it will stop, the more debri that is stopped the less wear that your engine will suffer. Why skimp on something like that, even the higher price scale filters are still cheap and could over the years save you a fortune in worn engine / replacement parts etc.

Thanks very much for your reply, I have been using Mann oil filters (from german Swedish and french) i think o.k, but do you know of any real quality makes?

The make of oil filter you mention are fine, a lot of specialist garges use them, I think they might even be OME.  But don't change them every oil change, just every other, as they get better with age!  Read the E30 OIL discussion at the top of the second page if this forum.
