I use an alloy cleaner/restorer from Frost's autocare in Rochdale, although I'm sure you could get it from other places in the UK.  You basically spray it on and leave it to soak into the cast alloy, this causes it to bubble a bit as it reacts with the metal, then you just wash it off with water, easy!

It leaves the surfaces looking really clean.  I suppose it's a bit like Wonder Wheels, as it contains acid.  I use it on both my BM's.

Jonathan, Manchester.

I did this on the engine bay of my E30 316i using one of the branded (I forget which) engine bay "degunkers". Like Jonathan says you also spray this on and leave it to soak. I then used a toothbrush to scrub the dirt and rinsed it off with water. For the concours finish, BMW sell a good engine laquer. However, a word of warning, use it sparingly and don't let the laquer get on any hoses (it'll bloom on the rubber) or the paintwork (it dulls the colour of the paint).

I took the rocker cover and manifold off the car and polished them up a bit using a fine wire brush attached to an electric drill, then polished it up with t cut, worked well but might look better cleaned and painted i reckon, think i'll do a black rocker cover with silver writing similar to the m40 engine rocker cover, the alloy cleaner mentioned is a good idea to wonder wheels works the same as mentioned above, use some plastic cleaning and restoring spray on all the plastics really smartens it up.

Just a suggestion for the raised BMW logo's and horizontal bars on the rocker cover and injection manifold. I used wet and dry on these, starting with a coarse grade and gradually working to a finer grade. It smoothed them off nicely and finished it off with some Autoglym metal polish. A lot of elbow grease and effort but comes up a treat.

Retro is the way forward.....
