The sensor is at the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side, not sure how easy it is to replace when the radiator is in the car as I had mine changed when I had to replace the radiator.

hmmmm ....anything else I should check ? The coolant level seemed to be fine at the weekend although I will check again tonight , could there be an airblock which is stopping the coolant getting all round the rad and therefore the sensor is going off ...the rad was only replaced less than 20k ago

Might be worth pulling the connector of the sensor and giving the terminals a quick clean.

It usually is a faulty sensor I've had it twice an E36 with no problem and an E39 which was a major problem

went in to replace mine,  they stripped it down and found they ordered the wrong part put it back together and 2 days later the radiator went

From a 167.00 bill for a faulty sensor to a full on 550.00 pound repair bill which became 460.00 as I reckoned their foul up caused part of the problem - surprised me when they said the part of the radiator that burst was plastic (my last radiator repair on a car they were metal)

Currently E38 - 740
