I don't know how to post the link here, but there's a 1976 633CSi on ebay at the mo (4 days to go). It's in waht looks like Arctic blue metallic. I used to see this car a couple of years ago in West London and it was remarkably straight - a few rust bubbles here and there but compared to most sixes built in the Eighties, very decent. Lots of new bits like shocks and prop donuts, £1200 starting price.
Must be the oldest one left on the road? |

Probably is. The only other one I've see running in the past couple of years bears a "T"-suffix plate.
Having said that, there is an early Six which I discovered next to a builders yard in Haggerston, just down the road from my office in Dalston. It's still there, but the front reg. plate has been removed, so I can't identify the year of registration.... -------------

There is another one which I see occasionally in London, a light metallic blue car (Fjord blue) which was in BMW car a few years back. The reg number is WGO ???R and it's not bad looking. It's owned I believe by a rather well to do Woman who's owned it for about 20 odd years if not 25.
The Ebay car is starting at £1200, a bit high. He's banging on about the rare Karmann built cars; they're rare because they were horrible rust heaps and once the vastly better 635CSi appeeared, nobody wanted them. I'd pay about £800 at a push, but 'rare' and 'valuable' are often uneasy bedfellows. Ivan; P.M me your number so we can have a natter at Gaydon! You Six mad deviant you!! |

A friend of mine has a 1974 'M' reg 633 in red with black leather interior. The family has owned the car from new and its gorgeous. The 633 wasn't introduced into the UK until 1976, so it's hardly likely that the one you've seen is an E24. More likely it's an E9 3.0CSi -------------

It's probably the last working Karmann-built 633 in the UK...

According to the paperwork that comes with the car, and all the receipts from the original supplier of the car, it is a 1974 reg 633, it is badged up as such also. I owned THE VERY FIRST 633CSi, chassis number 00001. Buit July 1976, registered August 1976. 1974 M is a 3 litre CS (carbs), CSA (Carbs and auto) or CSi (injection, manual gearbox). A 1974 633CSi does not exist in any shape or form. |

Also, don't let anyone tell you that the E9 was a better car than the early 6 Series because they weren't. The 633CSi was slightly bigger and heavier than the E9 but performance was similar, the handling and roadholding vastly better. The original 635CSi from '78 with Bilsteins, LSD and the 5 speed 'dogleg' gearbox was a hugely superior machine to the CSL which really, wasn't that great a car - the E3 saloons (2500 - 3.3LiA) were much better. The E9 relies on it's styling and in fact was a bit of a lash up - a stretched 2000 saloon chassis with a very flexible body and a six cylinder engine dropped in. My CSL (now sold at a huge profit :-) !) was more boulevard cruiser than sports car. They feel 100 years old whereas a 6 still feels like a modern car.
I still like E9 Coupes but it's sad just how worthless a 6 Series needling a bit of love is. Just seen a whie 628CSi Auto on the 'bay for £255. Hmmmmmm....... |

Hi All, Indeed Karmann built 6-ers are becoming very rare nowadays. Karmann built the cars for BMW from Oct 1975 till Aug 1977. The BMW 630CS is the only carburetted version of the 6-series and was built only from 1976 till/incl 1979 to be replaced with the 628CSi. It was never sold new in the UK (base-model 633 at the time), but that does not have to mean that they were not at some stage imported by enthusiasts. It is quite a rare car these days, as only 3972 of this type were ever built, and most rusted away unfortunately. Even in its home-country Germany there are only about 130 examples left. In Holland where I live only approx 20-30. I happen to be the lucky owner of a very early Karmann built example 630CS 4 speed manual. It was built on June 30 1976. I bought it from the first owner who only used it in Summer for pleasure drives only. He had the car in use untill 1998 and then kept it for another 3. He then bought a new 850CSi which he uses for the same purpose. It has currently only 53000 miles covered from new with full maintenance history & original documentation with the car. It's unrestored and in very good original condition. The Nov 1976 633CSi car shown here on e-bay has unfortunately most of the weak-spots of those early cars in it. But I think it's worth it to restore the car. I think in the UK the Karmann cars are even more rare then on mainland Europe. Although the faster and more luxurious cars like 635CSi's and M635CSi's are the most wanted cars, I definately notice a huge pick-up in interest for the early cars! Even owners of the above mentioned types now also want an early model in addition to their collection! And... before it is too late - grab what you can. On clubmeetings the early cars are getting most of the attention cause the later cars are much more common. Prices for (very) good ones are also on the rise. The seller who explained about the Karmann-plate in the A-pillar has unfortunately drawn the wrong conclusion: #45 applies to the code for the paint, and not the chassis-nr. The only way to know which # off the line it is, is by looking at the last three digits of the VIN nr. My car for example has Karmann-nr 1190 (has nothing to do with posn off the line) 075 for paint (Reseda Green) and VIN nr 4360453 My car was in fact car # 453 off the line, and built on June 30th 1976. I think this car must have a VIN in the range 4380001-4380218 (6CS - manual - righthand drive) Just some info which I thought might be of interest to know. If anyone wants to know more, please don't hessitate to contact me.
