Last weekend I acquired an e21 320 which has been in storage for 5 years. The cars in relatively good condition with only 54,000 miles and has little blistering around the arches (better than most e21s) and some mould on the interior but I'd like to get this car running again.

I've had a quick 15 minute look around it and have taken a note of a few things to be done to the engine before I even consider starting the it, like changing the oil and filter, new fuel filters, new spark plugs, etc and I'll need to lubricate a few components like brake linkages but can anyone suggest areas which will need looking at before I take it for a gentle run.

TIA

Hi

The cam belt can fail so check that also that it turns over by hand inc the water pump etc.  the 320 uses a mechanical pump with the built in filer of the block. The rear brakes drum adjustuer tend to seaze so it is new back plate or a lot of heat, also the front piston can seaze. The bleed screww for the cooling also tends to seaze and snap very easy.

The electrics are okay but new fuses and wire wool the connections.

A lot of the rubber bushes can go esp the steering rack if there has been an oil leak.

change the coolant and the brake fluid also - when doing this check the various pipes and hoses.

Ricc

The March issue of "Total BMW" has an article on an E21 320 and its associated engine problems, which might be worth a look. Hope this helps!
