1997 E39 523i with the M52 engine.

Owners manual is vague and just states Bosch F7LDCR or NGK BKR6EK

However the Bentley manual says these plugs are for the M62 up to 07/97 and the M52 engine should have the Bosch F8LDCR

just logged on to http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk - www.sparkplugs.co.uk and went through their menu system and it suggests the NGK plug BKR6EK

Anybody done a plug change recently on same type engine and if so, what did you use?

was your car dealer serviced last time they were changed? If so what did they use?

couldn't tell ya....my log book with all the receipts were lost, so not even sure when they were last done.

do you have any record of what was used on your last service?

I was himmin' & hawin' about the idea of using Iridium plugs?  are they worth the few extra yoyo's?

The BMW ETK lists the BOSCH F7LDCR, NGK BKR6EK or "High Power" BOSCH FGR7DQP and NGK BKR6EQUP

I would personally stick with the Bosch plugs as i have heard horror stories involving the NGK's

I began looking for the plug reference # last night and had forgotten that it is far more technical than my E30. Anyway, began to get dark and I called it a day when my 10mm socket and its little extension bar fell down to be lost forever

Same as that Miles, I've heard of NGK's ceramic insulators breaking, even when fitted with the proper gear, i.e a correct socket and rubber sleeve insert.

Tom, if you can stick to the BOSCH

Killian, It will probably make it's way down into the Splash tray, and hopefully not down on the road, was it part of an expensive set? I hate losing tools like that, I'd strip a car for a good socket/spanner whatever

Just replaced the plugs with Bosch plugs type FR7LD+ (+7).  They are the closest I could get to the Bosch F7LDCR.  Picked them up at the motor factors at Blanch Centre for €32/set.

Noticable difference in acceleration.  Plugs that were in were the NGK BKR6EK equivalents and were well worn.  Anybody an idea from the service manual what is the recommended service interval for the plugs?  I heard somewhere it's 60k miles?

I thought that price wasn't bad for 6 plugs, especially Bosch ones.

I just think the Bosch plugs are hard to find...most back street shops didn't have them.  Joe-318is told me to go to BSC.

You could always mail order them from GSF Car parts or Eurocarparts ? £2.50 each from GSF.

We have a local GSF here..the euro equivalent price here is about €5 anyway so with postage it would work out the same.

If I ordered from UK, with exchange rates & postage I wouldn't save that much.

According to my service booklet, the E39 (520i, 523i & 528i) spark plugs are renewed every Inspection I service only!

Oh yeah,,, blame me why don't ya

32 euro isn't bad for 6 high quality plug's

I know that place charges well for stuff like furry dices and go faster glow in the dark cigarette lighters, but consumables like wiper blades, plug's, filters, seem to be reasonable enough.

The amount of miles between Inspection Is depend on your driving style, etc. and is shown on the Service Indicator of your instrument cluster. There is no set duration between services!

The pattern is Oil Service - Inspection I - Oil Service - Inspection II - etc.

I don't bother with those SI lights.  I just assume a typical oil change is approx 12k miles, that would mean plugs every 30k.  (Every 2 yrs)Thanks.

I used to use Bosch Super4's in my old 525e and they were fine, but I cant say that they made much difference.

A friend swears by these plugs, but I would love to know whether any body rates them much before I go and buy some for my '89 535. Any one know much about the Super 4's?

Thanks.
