Hello Guys... I need some assistance with this (intermittent) issue I'm experiencing.. everytime I go to the mechanics, the noise is gone.. but when I'm nowhere near a mechanics the sound is back...very annoying... anyway some background to the problem...

I'm driving through town... hit a few potholes/bumps.. and all of a sudden I get this loud grinding sound coming from the left hand side of the car.. i can feel that something is rotating(driveshaft maybe) a piece of metal is rubbing against it... the more i slow down the louder and longer the grinding sound gets.. At 30 mph the car sounds like a 1950's motorbike...  at first i thought it was something rubbing against the breakdiscs.. but after checking the wheels, nothing was found/..

Are there any exposed rotating bits under the passenger side that could be grinding against some metal piece/parts?  I've taken off both front wheels to see of anything was rubbing against my 15" BBS's.. but nothing.. wheels are untouched... One thing i did notice is, when I do a full right turn the noise will disappear comletely... but the more i turn to the left the noise gets louder... so I checked the front left wheel first... and one more strange thing.... when the grinding noise starts, i stop the car, reverse a few meters.. and the noise is gone until i hit some other bump or hole...etc... but than it will completely disappear for a few miles... than back again....

Also when whatever is grinding away, i can feel the vibrations in the handbreak... so im thinking it is something below the handbreak area... anyone got any ideas?

I got my wishbones done last week... i though that may cure this... but the sound is back... i need help.... ...

Could be a stone caught between the brake disc and splasher shield.  This has been mentioned before on these forums as a cause of noise from the front end.

I had exactly that, went down a minor road, few
bumps, and then there was a screeching grinding
sound, bit like dragging a spade up the path. Got
home and found a stone stuck between the backing
shield and the rear brake disc.

But if you say you can feel a vibration on the
handbreak, you may have hit the exhaust and
pushed it up so its touching the underneath of the
car, or a stone between the zorst heat shield.

But with the noise disapearing when turning, points
back to the front brakes. Are the brakepads low?

went to the mechanic..  put it on the ramp.. checked for lose things.. he noticed that the propagator shaft (or is it drive shaft??) was lose..( http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF91&mospid=47256&prod=19891000&btnr=26_0004&hg=26&fg=05 - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF91&mospi d=47256&prod=19891000&btnr=26_0004&hg=26&fg= 05 ) he advised me to either get a hold of a 2nd hand driveshaft if poss.. or get the brackets from a BMW dealer..

still though.. thanks for the feedback...
