Hi, i have a 98 840 sport in the uk and it has a strange problem. When the car is driven hard (kick down mode used etc)it affects the idle, it is lmpy as if there is a misfire. If the car is turned off and on again though it clears itself. Today however as I was trying to accelerate hard the car wouldn't produce and power and sounded rough. It has done 40kmiles and is genuine.

Any ideas?

Regards

is it every time you accelerate hard or maybee when the fuel level drops below half way or a quarter ?

The fuel level doesn't affect t, it happens when the car is driven hard when fully warm. Indeed when the car is fully warm it can have a slightly rough idle but barely noticeable. Other times it is v8 smooth as it should be! Its really annoying, if the car is driven gently the whole time it is ok.

Need to get it sorted.

My old man had a similar problem on his '97 840. Made for some rather scary overtaking moments!

Anyway, after much hmmm'ing and haaa'ing by the Stealer, it turned out to be nothing more serious than a faulty cam-shaft sensor. Cost £120 all in for dealer to replace part and fit.

In general, the 4.4 V8 is feckin bulletproof and it tends to be the electricals around the engine that go well before any head/block problems.

I'd have a look at that as it caused all the symptoms you describe. Hope this helps.

Mark, a few people have mentioned that, apparantly it is easy to change so i might as well do it anyway to rule it out.

Cheers,
