Upon start-up, the car runs various checks and lets you know accordingly.  However, it cannot be relied upon; it is just a driver's aid.   Still need to run the usual car maintenance...

What bmw have you got? is it an E30? the check system with the LEDs on it sometimes fails due to wiring faults at the source, eg inside the light unit.  Try to disconnect a front bulb or something similar say a dipped beam and then see if it reports a fault. If it doesn't then the faults in the unit itself. May just need some LEDs replacing.

But if its not an E30, i have contributed to my possible furure RSI for nothing.
