I believe the V12 is bullet proof, although i think its the electronics you have to watch out for, if it hasnt got FBMWSH, then be wary... It will be very expensive to run, but such a lovely car! Nice....very jealous!

Whats he got at the moment? What are they asking for it? Mileage, colour, spec, etc are all important too

I know it's a substantially different car than mine, but the weight of the engine does put a lot of pressure on the suspension, and the power and torque can also wreak havoc on the drivetrain if the owner was a little ... enthusiastic.

Check for rust. Find out if it's been in a shunt. If it has, probably better to walk away. Bodywork is very tricky to fix and expensive, so often people "fix" them on the cheap and then flog them on.

hi silverbeastie

this link may help in what to look out for

http://www.bmwe31.com/Pre_Purchase_Inspection.htm - http://www.bmwe31.com/Pre_Purchase_Inspection.htm

my mechanics prefer working on V8 E31s rather than V12s because they have to pull the V12 out half the time to get to the tranny and drive train when something goes wrong.  the dual fly by wire throttle bodies can be troublesome too.

regards skip

Look for a later 840ci (4.4 not 4.0). Much better.

If his heart is set on an 850, he can expect a lot of running and maintanence costs, unless he goes for a later 850csi, which are much better and much more expensive.
