I was going to replace my Bridgstones with some Toyo Proxes T1S for £88 each fitted. However the tyre place has said that the T1S is being phased out in favour of the T1R and they can do me them for the same price. Has anyone any experience of these tyres?

Thanks

Hi pete.

don't fit T1S, they don't seem to suit the heavier 3 series'. Too noisy and my coupe rips them up in bends.

better on light hatches in my view.

I am going back to continentals!

What kind of continentals? sportcontact?

I'm after something that will give me a sporty handling but that sin't too expensive.

I know it's quite far removed however my local tyre place advised me against Proxes for the same reasons as above on my e32 running on 235/45 255/40 widths as they are too soft and to go with with FK451 Falkens

Strangely enough I was just looking af FK451's. Can get them delivered to my door from My tyres for about £65 each. I've had ZE502's in the past and they were ok although that was on a Sierra.

Also seen Hankook Ventus sport K104 and Avon ZZ3. Both look good value but are they any good? There is too much choice!!

I had falken 451's on my 535 and they were good. They do start to object to the lardy mass of a nigh on 2 ton car pulling high G corners as they age though. Mine delaminated one, actually pulling the layers apart!

I guess this is probably commonon cars of that size & weight.

Sport contacts all the way unless they release something better...

My last 3 coupe had goodyear GSD+, they were a little soft but no quality problems at all. I think they are discontinued??

I loved my Proxes T1-S's on my Mondeo they were superb. Does the 328 kill em quick? My 1.6 mondy went through a front pair in 6 months or so (front wheel drive and power steering)

I am having lots of grief with mine. They were ok for the first 3k, then they have gotten more and more noisy.

They are lasting well but they have been checked for balance and defects so many times as they cause a really irritating fine vibration and humming. Sounds similar to a bearing near the end of its life.

The shoulders 'feather' really easily on my coupe, which I've never had this trouble with them before on other vehicles, so it must be the weight?

Contis - no problems.

Sleeper, how much do you pay for Sport contacts?

just checked with my man and they are 109.90 all done, in the car park. that is sport contact 2's.

You could probably get them slightly cheaper elsewhere but I get free mobile puncture repairs nationwide with these guys which is a real bonus for me!

T1-R a more hard wearing compund yet still the best wet grip tyre (along with Falken) on the market IMHO and not bad dry either, getting sufficiently sticky once you get some temp into the rubber.

I'm sticking 300bhp through mine and so far so good and ther're just scrubbing in.

They are sticky compound treads and as such wear faster than standard compund tyres. There is always a trade off. If your tyre lasts over 10K then it's likely not a particuarly great sport tyre but will be fine for non-M cars.

E.g. Miche' Pilot Sport.. last for ages, average dry grip and so so wet but lasts and lasts.

T1-R aimed at sport cars - I'm happy if I get 5K on a set and will live with 3K to then stick them on my track wheels when they go past 4mm.

Eagle F1 s and Conti Sport Contacts offer some better grip whilst lasting longer than the Toyos. A I say everything

My pick for a good all round weather tyre with half reasonable durability would be sth like the new Pirelli P Zero Nero or Miche' PS2s.

Of all of the above - the Toyo T1-Rs have the stiffest side walls for those interested so I could have afforded to run 255/265s more easily. T1-R supposed to be both quieter, longer lasting and woth more lateral grip in the wet.

Talk to Mark @ Blackcircles for advice.. he knows his black stuff.

Sleeper, what speed did you get the tiny humming noise and minute vibration?? I ask as my friend has this issue and although it is not a problem he is curious as to what it is. His only starts at high speed and the vibration is hardly noticeable.

Thanks

Phil

My colleague has T1S fitted to his Alfa 145 and he said 'you know they're really sticky tyres when you get home and they've got gravel stuck to them'. He thinks there great, just not very hard wearing. If the T1Rs are a bit harder then they may be ok. Realistically I need them to last at least 10K. I do over 16K a year so any less and it starts to get expensive.

I will have a chat with Mark.

Thanks for your input M Blur beerchug

No problem m8.. I've been through the tyre-deliberation mill before.. it's a minefield.. you want to think you're getting the best for your hard earned money. I did the sasme and canvassed the variosu groups and similarly got a mixed bag of opinions.

Mark really knows his rubber from his err.. rubber..
