I am interested in hearing your views on both engines. I have been told the 325i has most likely been thrashed thus a 320i is a better buy, but the 325i is better on fuel due to a better power to weight ratio. Can you please post up your comments on both engines for and against

a well cared for engine and lots of reciepts and a tidy well cared for car means that even if the engine has been thrashed yet well look after will be much better than one that has been used gently and poorly maintained, i.e little or no oil, or broken down oil that doesn't do its job. in terms of performance, for similar economy then the 325 is way better however will be more costly on the insurance. and because the 325 was more popular then finding one to rob bits from from the scrappy is probably easier and they useually have more resale value/interest

hope that helps

I would be hard pressed to choose. I think the 325 would probably win out if the money were similar, but I've got a tender spot in my heart for the 320i...

Had an '88 320i, lovely car to run - nice and smooth. No complaints engine wise. Engine is a lot smoother than my current car (6 pot against a 4 pot - no comparison).

325i if you want power and acceleration, 320i if you want silky smoothness with adequate performance. The old Parkers E30 review summed it up:"320i has the grace, 325i the pace"

Test drive both and buy the one you like, regardless of what someone on a forum said. If you still can't decide - buy one of each !

I've had a 320i conv with switchable auto and now have a 325i with the regular auto.  Obviously the conv is a bit heavier, but there is a 3-4mpg advantage with the 325i over 320i in this comparison.  Also had a 320i manual and it was 2-3mpg better than the 325i auto.
