Is it just me or does that seem like a very easy fix?? A back door, surely that would be fairly simple to come across with the right contacts. Of course that doesn't say for the condition of the rest of the car. Needs a back box, again not too tricky. Hey, a red E23 that's still red - surely something worth saving?!! If I didn't have so many projects on my plate I would seriously consider it.

looks very orange to me. its different with that lsd and manual box. good buy for someone, i wouldent like to try and match that colour. you would have to spray one full side of the car to get that colour blended in....

Date Posted: 11-March-2005 at 04:24

Yes Rob, old Henna red turns orange as it ages, then fades right out to a dull matt finish, nice

Tetley Dave was going for this car, but the price is too much now.

thats the trouble with some old cars, depending what colour it is its somtimes hard to match the paint. this one is going to be a pig, as its not matalic, its a solid base colour...

right, how cool would this be. change every single bolt on panel on a e23 with a different colour panel from several cars.you would end up with a retro car that would sell for shed loads on fleabay, just put in the tital, united colours of benaton.. simple, i think it would work. stand out from the crowd.. it would look great at bmw festival in the summer.

cool idea.

thats just how VW used to build the Harlequin Polos - build normal cars, then swap the panels around to make Harlequins - weird!

Flat paint is ease to bring back because  it has no lacker so you can cut the old dead paint off unlike lacked cars, mines had paint in the past and you can't see, good way to tell is by looking at the door shuts. mat paint is by far the  werse  as you will never get as good a mach as you can with flat paint.

Website pics I'll try and update later tonight. I couldn't be bothered last night as I was home late! They aren't really that spectacular as the sun never gets over the buildings behind the car park, so the camera doesn't pick up the shine of the chrome. Still like that old e23....

I was replying to Mark's request for E28 pics with shiny chrome bits, I reckon the boy is a magpie with a chrome fixation

If the e23 wasn't so far away I would be tempted to expand my BMW fleet to two by buying it - how hard could it be to sort the door and the exhaust?

Doive, fly down to Gatwick, rail stn right in the airport, fast train to Brighton, seller to meet you at Bton Stn - easy!

A red manual 735i is extremely rare. so much faster than the usual ZF slushbox.

don;t let this car go to the banger circuit

Hmmm. It would increase my BMW fleet to two, but my overall car fleet to five. I currently have space at the flat for two cars and I'm running out of friendly driveways I can borrow! Somebody closer can save this one surely?! I'd love to but don't have the facilities. I saw one of these being banger raced a few years back.... haven't been to a banger race since.

I'm trying to entice people to bid on it who have more resources than I do.... no space, no money. The poor old girl would get pushed to the back of a shed somewhere and forgotten about until my E28-inflicted overdraft had cleared a bit. All I'm saying is that surely the problems would be easily sorted, making her the ideal project for someone who fancies an old e23?! There must be someone on the forum who would take her on.

Nothing wrong with saving a scrapped car! I snatched mine literally from the forks of the yard forklift, they were planning to move her round to the 'parts' section later that day. So surely someone out there will see that old e23 right, save yet another one from a painful end in a breakers yard.

the milage is so low, If you think mine is hight at 170000 at 23 years at 10000 it would be at 230000 170000 is low for it. so 20 years at 10 shoud be 200000 miles so at 84000 miles me thinks this is bargin at £117   at the mo.

sorry mark, doive, im trying to save the sunbury car project, will be seing it today and ive got my other beast going on the road in 3 weeks. plus i have a v.w.passat and a low milage fiesta that im supose to be fixing up for my daughter. as philip says its rare, and i think it will end up being broken fot its gearbox and engine to go into someones project.its the colour that puts me off ORANGE it reminds me of a dyno rod van, the orange ones, and they shovel s..t dont they?? ive made my excuses what about you philip. it would brighten up your life. you could say when you came home on the train and arrive at the station where did i put my car. oh there it is,thats before the train gets in to witham.

thinking about it mark, your the closest, go and park yours next to it and take some photoes or bid and get it. its a shame to loose this one with it being low milage as well.

I was going for this car, but when you weigh up the work it needs and the end value, is it worth it. It also needs two front tyres and they look like OE to me, Metric? I think about £100 would have been ok for this, but no more. Besides, I've still got a hankering for an e28 Auto. Being a rare manual doesn't make it more desirable IMO, but it would be interesting on a wet road! A ****** to sell on, I would imagine. I didn't mind being outbid, there's an e28 with my name on it out there somewhere.

Welcome to the board Simon, and welcome to the small band of nutters who like E23's.

I used to have a V12 XJS too, A V regd pre-HE. Fantastic engine & GM 400 box, shame about the rest of the car!

Have you crawled all over & under the 735i yet.

What are the floors/sills/jacking points like?

Is the car worth repairing?

Please start a post when you have decided what to do, and what parts you need.

I'm not far from you, and a manual e23 is an interesting car IMO. Try to repair, but don't break it!
Once you get it, mail me the details!

Simon,

you cannot host pics on this board directly. you must host the pics elsewhere, and then post a link to the pic on the board.

I use Yahoo Geocities to host my pics but there is a monthly fee.

Not Henna!

more like mid grey metallic - I may be using them on my own car, in which case a Cosmos Blue door will be available FREE but its a bit rusty along the bottom edge, like many E23's

Erm.no.It generally starts ok, but doesnt like to charge! The battery has just cried enough, after putting up with a scrapyard alternator-didn't work, a recon one, didn't work, then another recon one-which did!The lesson learned was rather than faffing about paying £100 for a recon o.e. spec one, i could of got later, higher output one for £55, you live+ learn.well i live anyway! lol.

I hope you were able to return or re-sell the wrong alternator

I used to find that all the time during my Jag days - being sold parts that wouln't fit my Jag, even whgen you supply chassis #.

it seems Jaguar would often fit any bits they had to hand when they were building the cars, so some cars were built with "wrong" bits.
