I have an E30 320is with 120,000 miles on the clock with a 'noise'

Its a sort of whirring/droning noise that is always there but reaches it peek at about 70MPH.

I can't tell where it's coming from but i think its the rear of the car.

I've had the wheel bearing changed and that done nothing.

The garage i took it to said it might be the Diff going or prop shaft bearings, without actually changing the parts its difficult to say what it is.

Has anyone had this problem before i start ripping my car apart and costing me a fortune!

HELP!

It's the laccy band winding up I would say it's the diff.Get some one to drive the car while you have a listen about, might help you loacte where the noise is coming from exactly.

If you are sure it's not a wheel bearing, I'd supect the diff. E30 diffs are often noisy. You could try draining the oil and trying a synthetic. Won't be cheap, but cheaper than a new diff!

Good rule of thumb that I use is, if the droning disappears when you take the power off and coast then it would point towards the drivetrain, Propshaft bearing, diff. If it continues to drone after the power is removed then I would consider checking the wheel/drive shaft bearings.

As Neil says, if the wheel bearings are ok then probably the diff and an oil change may help.
