A new day and a new month and a new thread....

Finally there is sunshine outside my windows...although it has been raining overnight cos the pond level is up a bit from yesterday and the fish are hyperactive (which always happens after fresh rainwater goes into the said pond).

Today I have nothing planned, might go for a walk later, but then again there is motor sport on British Eurosport Channel, so might just sit an watch that instead.

Oh well, best get some breakfast I spose....

Pinch and & punch to you Ally.

After a glourious day yesterday, at dusk it rained here.

Overnight we have had some rather good thunderstorms, and the ground is still damp this morning.

Wifey has gone to her usual sunday morning boot sales, on her return we are going to Rhyl for a picnic etc, as according to the met office home page, it should be 17 centigrade there today, and only part cloudy.

I didnt know you were into fish, I enjoy the odd day on a river bank, and have a tropical tank, along with a garden pond.

I'd like to upgrade to a marine tank, but being as I work away so often, its not such a good idea, tropical are very easy for Jackie and the girls to look after when i'm not here.

I think I've finally got the Central web site ok, have a look, let me know what you think

Site looks nifty Niggles

The fish are the ones who were living in the 5ft tank on my kitchen worktop in the shed that I lived in, they are now terrorising the frogs in the pond in my back garden

Not having a car I won't be going anywhere this weekend, just as I don't any weekend

Least I got this poot to play with, borrowed from Master Rhys so I can annoy you with daft threads Niggles, that is til I get my own pooter which is, I believe, in the pipeline at the mo

Oh and by the way people..this may be a non car type silly thread, but that doesn't mean you can be naughty with language or insults...cos Uncle Niggles doesn't like that and neither do I cos it gets the thread shut even quicker than Cinderella's wardrobe

Express yourselves and let off steam but behave and then Uncle Niggles will be happy

(is that enough grovelling Uncle Niggles?)

Anyway, its nice that the thread is still open, bit like old times really

Women can load the washing cos we are less likely to mix a red sock with the whites, like you fella's..and you can push the button..seeing as you love pushing the right button so much and you can empty it, hang washing out AND iron it.

Erm..no Rhys..not this one...the 'other one' and you have, thank you muchley...I didn't want that thread to start going in the direction of personal slanging, just for it to be there for healthy debate, but as with a few things recently, it didn't go as planned.

Well in doghouse, neither Telewest or packard bell helplines could reset pooter. Wendy had it in safe mode but even putting it back a couple of days wouldn't stop the fatal error coming up as soon as windows icons on screen.

She had to do a total wipe and reload from recovery discs -  started at 7pm, still going. Think I have a lot of grovelling to do. It is a few years old and can only be upgraded so far, but maybe getting the max RAM it'll take so it'll run XP would be a good move, even Microsoft don't recognise 98SE anymore and I can't run to £200 for a new one this month!

OK folks, the thread is safe for a few days at least. Ally (Goldryder) is taking a vacation in Yorks biggest hotel, unfortunatly the only entrance pass is that you need to be poorly.
She didn't feel very well, went to the medical drop in centre which immediatly called a big white taxi, u-turns in road siren, belting out, running red lights (legaly) and is now feeling a bit better. and is enjoying the hospital-ity at the general while they run a few tests.

She has asked me to keep her posted as to whats happening, and I will pass on any messages, just pm them to me and I'll pass them on.

LOL I'm expecting serious fun when Intel put more than 640k of onboard memory in the processor

think mine must have been W 3.1.. I know the computer had a turbo button... lol.

Had a DOS game called 'Mystic Towers' brill game, wonder if I can get it to work on this thing?

At moment, got a custom made tower unit running a dual bios mother board (Gigabyte), an AMD 2000 chip and about 256meg of RAM and a 60 Gb H/D.
Also got a Dell Lattitude C510, 384 Meg RAM 20 Gig H/D running am Intel celeron (don't like em) 1.2 GHz chip.
Prefer Lappy, and Ally is borrowing the tower.

Ahhh the good ol' days

C:\> Bad command or filename

A mate of mine had an IBM 286 25 with Wolfenstein3D on it. It seemed so cutting edge back in 1989!

My first PC was a Dell Dimension P90 8Mb RAM which I got back in 1995 when 486 DX4's still walked the earth. Needless to say it cost a heap and even upgrading to 16Mb RAM cost £500!!

Was great for playing Descent, Doom, Quake and the classic Duke Nukem!  and a slight improvement over the old Atari ST

Got pretty handy with the DOS commands too and tweaking the autoexec.bat and config.sys files to squeeze the most out of the 640k conventional memory.

Also remember the joy of loading all 11 Windows disks or even more fun all 25 MS Office floppies!

I used to work in a PC store when those were still common on PC cases. Apparently it was supposed to allow you to slow down 386 / 486 DX2/DX4 processors which were double-speed. This would allow you run your old 286 programs.

Course the button outlived the usefulness when Pentiums came along but some gullable foo... er.. respected clients thought they were impressive - you could add a few quid to the price of a Turbo-charged PC!

How sad am I, still able to remember this stuff

Ooooh I remember the floppies! First PC was a P75 with 16MB ram and a 512MB hard drive, running windows 3.1 and MS Works. However, by far the best aspect of that PC was Wolfenstein 3D! Great game.

This machine became my parents computer, I got a celeron 733 which was quite slow. Now have myself an AMD 2000 with 512MB RAM, GeForce FX5200 graphics and twin 80GB drives running Suse 9.2 - much better than Windows. Good system, I'm happy with it.

do you need a decent spec pc to run Linux? I have an old P166 / 64Mb RAM lying idle (too slow for anything newer than Win98!)... would Linux it run on this?

If you had one of the 'light' distros such as ubuntu it would work. Actually you could always try running knoppix on it to see if it will support the gnome graphical interface. Knoppix is a downloadable version of linux that you can burn to CD and use as a system recovery tool when windows inevitably falls over. Stick it into your CD rom and the system will auto boot from that. Good way of seeing if your system could run it or not. I have heard of a P233 with 64MB RAM happily running Suse before, so it may well run on your system. It all depends what you want - I assume you won't be doing any sort of high res image processing on that PC?!

LOL no I'll stick with the P4 for image & video editing!

Just want a system to learn how to install and use *nix and maybe eventually configure it as an internet gateway, plus web & mail server at some point. I'd like to learn php and set up mysql on it too. Course, I havn't a notion where to begin with any of this!

I also have an old P3 800 with 384Mb RAM which is only used for file storage, so I could try setting it up as a dual boot system.

Will *nix run on an NTFS-formatted drive?

Moi???..I never get into trouble Chris

I won't be online til late at night for a while, under doctors orders to rest as much as I can do, got huge amounts of pills and inhalers to take..so will be rattling before long, no doubt.

Was fun being taken to hospital in an ambulance with blues and twos going though..although at the time I have to admit I was a bit scared.

it always feels odd when others worry about us.  Personally can't s tanfd being fussed over. Just leave me to die quietly in bed!

I don't suppose thay had a chance to use the difribulator (sp?) by any chance? Surely the coolest and most dramatic piece of hospital equipment ever devised!

The old ticker threw a tantrum last Friday..I thought it was just really bad indigestion. Had a few more chestpains over the bank holiday but it was Tuesday when the clot moved into the lung that floored me. A few injections of Heparin to thin the blood and a shedload of pills etc....and a scan yesterday with radioactive stuff flowing through the bloodstream and I was let home provided I don't over do anything from here on in.

Some chance of that though..
