I just think the seller is being VERY optimistic to think it wil realise £400. Rob and I tried for this car on Sunday but to no avail, there is only so far you can go!

Maybe AG could send a message saying "call me after end of auction if you wish to cut a deal"

hopefully, a sense of reality will dawn on the seller by then

£7.25 now, who outbid Mark?

I think the game is up fella's! Whoever has bid above Mark is taking it seriously. They've exceeded the £1 increment! My bid of £8.50 was instantley outdone!

That's because they're using the "proxy bid" tactic. They set their limit, and e-Bay will automatically "stay ahead of the game" for them until that limit is reached.

In order to find out what that proxy bid limit is, you have to pay a little game of "e-Bastard". Cruel, but can be quite satisfying

It's a distortion of the market values, but my God it's hilarious. Sometimes you stumble across someone who's put in a fantastically high proxy bid.... so you let your fingers do the walking and, all the while, the bid price goes steadily upwards.....

Sounds like £50 too much. Why anyone would get
excited about a dreadful old heap like is is way
beyond me. A wobbly, 3 speed auto 17 mpg
motorised sofa with as much street credibility as a
Maxi - in fact, a Maxi would get more respect.

Why don't you guys look at old 6 Series instead - a
real classic BMW, same repair costs as a shed
seven and at the end of it, a car worth more that ten
pounds.

I'll personally take an e23 over the e24 any day, but that's my preference, what ever floats your boat at the end of the day.
Why is the 6 more coveted than a 7? Is it the shape, sporting looks or what? Underneath it's the same car more or less.

"I'll personally take an e23 over the e24 any day"

Well, that's between you and your analyst. In it's day
the 635CSi was an extremely desirable and highly
regarded car. The E23 was just an upmarket
Granada that tried to punch well above it's weight.
No they are not the same car. The E24 was 5 Series
based which is why as a car, it'll run rings around an
old 7 Series.
Sorry, but driving an E23 is the quickest way known
to look like your own Dad. A nice 6 Series still looks
every bit as svelte as they always did.

Rob; it's not about 'street cred'. It's called being a car
enthusiast and having aspirations. When these cars
were new, only someone who had been
lobotomised would have chosen an E23 over a 6
Series.

Even BMW hate the E23.

Posted By: robs e23
Date Posted: 07-May-2005 at 13:44
thats why they spent millions developing the 7 series and the 7 series out sold the 6 series by almost half again... 6 series was a sports coupe for the sporty gent of the day.

Bit funny, Andy. Either you really mean the above, or there has been a bit of a conversion on the road to Damascus. And besides, you usually refer to my Six - which you've seen - as a "shed".....

Not at all Horse. Back in 1982-4 when my Dad
worked at BMW, a burgundy red 635CSi was a
serious weapon. The price of a very nice house, it
was just one of those 'aaaaaaaaaahhhhh' cars.
Sadly most of them are a bit sad now but in nice
condition, they still turn heads.

As for E23's, somewhere I have some pictures I took
at BMW Action in Luckau (Germany) of a pair of
metallic grey 735i's being drag raced to death. One
car was an auto driven by a tatooed woman (classy)
who did a major burnout before each run. Eventually
it exploded in a pool of ATF
The other manual car was driven by Tatooed Bird's
other half and was a manual. By the Saturday it had
been hand painted matt black............not before it
shed it's rear exhaust box mid flight!

I know, it's frightening isn't it?

In the case of the E23, the house probably goes and
handles better.

Date Posted: 07-May-2005 at 14:17
Hmm, that's got me thinking............

"A desirable detatched* E23 set in a popular location
(Abacab Recycling) with all mod cons but requiring
some modernisation. Early viewing is strongly
recommended to appreciate the accomodation on
offer. Comes with it's own fully enclosing Paul Bracq
designed shed. No upward chain"

You can still be a car enthusiast and have aspirations as well as liking the e23, horses for courses (apologies Horsetan) at the end of the day.
So wether you like Jags, Mercs, Maxi's, Allegro's, or even a Daf, then you are still an enthusiast, in fact I'd say you're more of an enthusiast if you prefer a certain marque of a car (i.e. an e24 or e23) than if you want to go from one type to another in quick succession. In other words, you're a car enthusiast in general or an enthusiast of a particular type. I like the e24, but I prefer the e23, I'm not keen on the e32, I like the e38, wouldn't mind an e65 but an e23 is my preference.

Posted By: Andyboy
Date Posted: 07-May-2005 at 14:43
I'm the opposite; never liked the E23 (looks like a five
minute job with a ruler and a picture of a 6 Series)
and I ****** abhor the E12 with a passion. The E32
was a massive step forward over the E23. I run one
as a daily banger - did 280 miles in it today to meet
the decorator to sort my new house out, set the
cruise at 90 all the way up and all the way back
again, averaged 28 mpg. On the way back dropped
in to see a mate and bought fout 15 inch BBS E34/32
wheels with newish Firestones for £25. The E32
does look like a bloated E34 and they only look okay
when they've been lowered (ditto E23). They are of
course a totally valueless old shed and an E34 parts
donor. I wouldn't say that I really loved my old 730i,
but I have to respect the 225'000 miles she's done.
I like the E38 much more - I'm waiting for one to
appear on Ebay with a blown autobox so that I can
do a manual conversion (don't do autos). Hmmm,
740i 4.4 with a six speed manual :-)

Personally I like all the 80's Beemers which is why I've owned a 520i & 528i. The fuel consumption of the 528i was awful though worse than my 735 auto!

How many of the mechanical parts can you use on an E23 from the next gen 7 series ?

Posted By: rubberknees50
Date Posted: 07-May-2005 at 17:10

Ebay can be comical, watched a few 635's recently as I like the "look" though don't actually want one, just curious what they fetch. Seen a 525e on several times, seller had £200 reserve, didn't get anywhere near it first time out when it was in fair condition, now with no MoT, off road for months and rust holes showing still asking same.

Maybe this 7 owner been reading Practical Classics price guide, quotes condition 3 (shed) as worth £450. Cars. like anything else, worth what someone will pay, whatever value you think they have.

Have to agree with you re 528i E28 fuel consumption. I have one and it definitely uses more gas than a 3.5 motronic E23. people tell me its due to overall gearing and less efficient fuel metering in the non-motronic 528i.

plenty of E23/E21/E28 era parts lived on well into the E34/E32/E36 era.

Ian T is right. It always amazes me what Price guides be it in PC or Parkers quote for nearly any car. They always seem to be way over the top.  The same goes for private sellers. It's only when their car has spent weeks in the paper/autotrader/ebay etc unsold that they twig they may be being a bit optomistic. Anyway anyone want to buy a C reg E23 133k miles, a few electrical faults, a bit of rust, new seat covers from Argos, 11 months MOT £1500 no offers!

Hey, I had a dream last night. I was back in my old

I'm not kidding you either, straight up. It's amazing
how detailed dreams can be.

Eh?

E34 has nothing in common with the E28. Different
body, interior, electrics, instruments, brakes,
suspension, axle, gearbox, engine, rad. Nothing
from an E28 fits an E34. Nothing from an E23 fits an
E32, even the block is different due to different
engine mount pick up points. The E36 is all different
again.

The one and only crossover is the 635CSi Highline
which used the E34/E32 engine.

Oh, and the BMW badges!

Yes, 528i's were crap on fuel. The M535i was better.

there are various small bits & pieces that fit later cars.

one example is Rear A/R bar links.

I just bought a pair for my E28 and the ETK listed all the models that they will fit, which included the e36. Maybe the ETK is wrong.

Could be the suppliers, Halfords list oil/air filters to fit a variety of models that the manufacters say aren't interchangeable, I looked up an E28 part (radiator)online on eurocarparts recently and found same part number shown for  sevral other models. I suspect some of them are "rounding off" parts so they ae a "good enough" fit.

Hmmmm I was more interested in later car parts fiting earlyer cars as there a boat load of later 735is from the 86-90's era.

As for 635's I agree they are nice lookers but way over priced especially when you think body parts are almost impossible to get hold of, & altimatly they are BMW's idea of a Ford Capri, just a mid size saloon in drag!

The rad I was looking up was for a 528, and I'd been told a 535 would fit, it does, but from a later E34 model, may apply to 7's, have a look on ECP on;ine site and compare part no's.

My 528i is an auto and does around 25 on a run, 18 on shorter runs. or 9 mpg if you run one mile & back!!

LMAO, pick a link, any link! Never thought about cruise being rare, seen it on 7's a lot. Will be driving it back, see earlier posts, rad came today, negotiating with Wendy when we can go, found a "speed camera test vehicle" decal on ebay..........Got a door sorted if I need one, was impressed with price, expected it to go higher than that myself. Glad you all approve, you know more about them than I do, will try to get to a show with it asap.

Thanks but hardly a hero, I read description carefully, not overheating, stub that overflow pipe connects to broken off so leaks. Got replacement, will bear osr door in mind, can't tell from pics how bad it is but if window not working prepared for worst. Cheers!

I am selling the 732i as I have too many cars, simple as that. its a lovely car inside & out.

I don't want to sell VJ as I love it, the colour, the moonroof, the climate control, all the SE toys.

you are right, I must deal with the faded mirrors and front apron on VJ. its on the never ending "things to do list"

playing with old BM's got to be better than sitting in pubs getting hammered at weekends???

Absolutely 110% correct - unless it's playing with old BMW's all day then relaxing with a beer? Not that I'm allowed to drink, you understand, lol

What the heck is a "moonroof" ?

the moonroof is the glass sunroof, glass instead of the metal panel!

Ahhh, been wondering what a moonroof was. I grew up in south london and metal ones were safer. Why moon? Is visibility better at night?

thanks for that Doive. you may be interested to learn that my E28 is getting a "make over" right now. works include: they have fitted & sprayed the used wing I supplied, plus fitted new rear bumper, removed manky old pinstripes, cut back and polished the paint all over to remove "gritty" finish from previous respray. its looking real clean now, and andy says its worth £1500. dream on!! its going to have gen BMW twin pinstripes in silver, should look very tasty. plus M-Tech sports interior being fitted. the only thing missing then will be a 3.5 motor???

I will post up some pics when its finished, so you guys can flame or praise it, as appropriate!

It looks good.

BUT:

Those wheels are absolutley awful. Did they come
from an Opel Corsa in Max Power? Refit the
originals NOW!!

Sorry, but modern wheels look very bad on an old
car. A set of 15 inch E34 alloys are best.

Man I looove the looks of a nice e28 - and that is a very very nice e28.

Not 100% sure about the wheels - different certainly, but perhaps not in keeping with the shark nosed design?? Just my opinion mate, keep them if they are to your tastes! If I remember correctly yours used to sit on a very nice set of cross spokes. One of the guys on here (can't remember who now) recently got himself a set of multi spoke alpina style jobbies, they looked the absolute business on the e28 - even made me think about getting a set for mine. As I say, she is your car mate and the choice is yours! Other than that, or perhaps I should more correctly say even with that she looks absolutely superb. Keep up the good work.

I'm always cautious about being critical of someone else's car - I've seen the damage it does on other forums.

I concur with Doive.  Philip, the wheels aren't my first choice, as you know I prefer BBS cross, but it's entirely your choice and if you like them thats fine. Classic cars are a very individual thing, no two owners are likely to want identical cars, if we did we'd all buy new ones!

My jury is still out on those rims. I am still mulling them over. For the set of 4 rims with excellent 225/55/16 tyres I paid £36, ie £9 per corner, not a bad deal I think.

I will give them time to grow on me before I think about removing them.

I appreciate all your views, I don't expect everyone to like everything. What a boring uniform world it would be if everyone was the same.

Have a great weekend all.
