Trying to think...

Have lots of dream cars...

1) The new BMW M3 (will be launched next year I think...)

2) The new BMW M5 (when they put the wipers the correct way!)

3) MB SL500

4) Jaguar XJR (the new shape)

I've "shown" you mine...your turn now

1) Jensen Interceptor

2) Rover SD1 series 1 V8-S

3) Vauxhall Chevette HSR

4) NSU RO80

5) Baby Bertha

I could continue for a further 20 or 30 cars, but I think I'll stop there!

Just off the top of my head, not really in any real order or giving any real thought..........

1. BMW e36 coupe 320 lol (Maybe if it had a supercharged v8 in it!)

2. TVR Cerbera/Tuscan/Sagaris/etc (shame they never made the speed 12  )

3. Mclaren Merc SLR

4. Bugatti EB110 SS (A later rare Dauer carbon fibre bodied version)

5. Ferrari Dino 246 GT/GTS

6. M3CSL or M5

7. Ferrari F40 or Jag XJ220

8. Shelby Cobra gt500

9. Metro 6r4 for rallying!!!

10. Aston Martin DB7 vantage (600bhp)

11. 1999 Ascari Ecosse (if you have heard one you will know why!!!)

I am sure i have missed a few hundred dream cars of that list but thats a few lol!

Ascari.. mmmm very nice.

Ideally I want an M1 Pro-car in perhaps Group 4 spec (i.e. 3.8 non-turbo and 385bhp) but I also like the thought of a full turbo spec 3.2. After that..hmm. However putting the M1 aside and keeping to a BMW theme.. My choices..

1. De Tomaso Guara

2. Morgan Aero8 GT or Z8

3. McLaren F1.. not fussy which one.. GTR, LM..

4. Early 320i turbo (racing) or M3 GTR (racer)

5. Dinan 850csi or perhaps a Alpina B12

6. E28 M535i

7. M3 GTR (road)

8. Alpina B10s

9. New M6

10. F-Nash BMW 328 or perhaps a 507

All these posts and no Lambos yet...?

1)  E26 BMW M1 - see my avatar

2)  3 x Lamborghini (Countach, Muira and Diablo)

3)  Aston Martin DB7, (coupe and convertible) probably the most beautiful car ever made.

4)  Alpina B12 (E31, E32 and E38)

5)  Alpina B10 E39 Touring, for those days when you need practicality.

6)  Lotus Carlton

7)  Range Rover (for the winter)

8)  RS2000, Audi Quattro and Opel Manta 400 for the forest tracks.

I'm feeling lucky tonight because I picked up my latest dream car last night
2000 Imola Red E39 M5

previous dream cars of mine that I've been lucky enough to own at one point

1997 MK3 Golf VR6
1995 6spd E34 M5
1981 MK2 RS2000
1981 Golf GTI Convertible
1983 MK1 Golf GTI Campaign
1981 MK1 Fiesta Supersport

others that I've not had the priviledge to own

Lotus Sunbeam
MK1 Astra GTE
Audi Quattro Turbo
RS500 Cosworth
Lancia Integrale Evo
E30 M3
Audi RS4 Avant
Mercedes 190 Cosworth
Shelby Cobra
Ferrari 355

just a small selection of cars that I would buy if lotto jackpot hit, I would probably need an NCP car park to house them

A kindred spirit, I see!  We must have been typing our lists at the same time.  I'm surprised no-one else here has picked up on the most wonderful car of it's era.

There are two RHD M1s in existence so we don't have to fight about them.  However, as soon as one of them comes up for sale in the uk, I'll be buying it.  I'll also respray it in the Andy Warhole colours

As far as the Countach goes, I'd probably plump for a 5000 with the wing... no point in trying to be subtle with a car like that.  I've sat in one but never driven.  Believe it's a pig to live with but I'd be happy just to park it in the drive.  I've done 3 figure speeds in a Muira and a Urracco though

M1 - it is part Lambo anyway.. well in conception but thankfully not build. Good ol Baur.

Nice one.. I believe the earlier LP400S is the better drive although you really want the QV anniversary with the carbon bodywork if you're going to go the whole hog.

Almost bought a black targa Jalpa 3500 just before I got 8LUR. Always fancied an Espada for trans-continental.. it's supposed to be very good at big speeds with plenty of cabin space.

I used to toy with the idea of a Countach replica but I don't have the necessary expertise to build one myself.  I'm told the kits are not for the feint hearted but a professionally built one can be had for less than £20k with Rover V8 power.

I've not kept up with the kit car industry in the last few years but I'm surprised no-one has done an M1 replica...?  Should be simple enough and could use many original parts.

But you buy a Countach for its' V12 surely..

M1 replica - Let's hope they never do.. be honest you buy it almost as much for it's handling (if not more) than its looks. I like original kit cars such as the Ultima and only replicas of cars that are os unobtainable such as Cobras, Lolas and McLaren M6s etc.

Woooooooooo... At least you make up the 2% who loves the car for what it is not the 98% who have been told my media propganda it's the most beatiful car.. Personally I doubt we'd be having this chat if it weren't for the silly 90's where a group of collectors decided it was the rarest and most expensive car in the world.

So no inverted snoobery intended - just it was never revered nearly as much at the time it was built.. it's an excess, pretty but not the best example of its era. More of a Maybach of its day (I see the irony in that statement).  Now if you want a true Bugatti.. Type 35 m8. or a beatiful Italian sports car.. then Maser A6CGS perhaps.

However from one anorak to another I applaud you for choosing pre-war cars that are often forgotten by others.. the Bentley was an inspired choice as I grovel from outside.

Can I come in from the cold yet..?

No, not yet.

The 57 is far from rare and is probably one of the most common Bugattis, and though the Atalante coupe is pretty rare, it's nowhere near as rare and expensive as "...rarest and most expensive car in the world." which in Bugatti terms is probably the Jean Bugatti designed  Royale coup de Napoleon.  The 57 iscertainly not an excess.  It's just a wee two seater coupe and M8LUR is probably more of an excess.  Your descriptions lead me to think that perhaps you are confusing the Maybachesque excess of the  Royale (type 41) with the type 57?

Royale:-

Type 57 Atalante:-

?

No Italian cars on my list but if I were forced to choose one it'd be either an Alfa Romeo 8C2300 or a 250 GTO Breadvan

I would buy a Countach, an M1, or a DB7 primarily for its beauty.  I'm not interested in being seen in one - few people pay heed to person in the driving seat anyway - but I do appreciate the designers art in these machines.

As far as driving excitement, there's little opportunity to drive cars like these at anywhere near their limit on public roads.  A replica could offer 95% of the driving experience for 95% of the time, and for 95% of us, that's as close as we may ever get

Cars are essentially asthetic pieces of equipment. No matter how 'good' the new M5 may be dynamically, I'd rather have an E31

Incidentally, how can you approve of pre war cars (which would handle like a bucket of brown stuff) and sneer at replica kits, most of which are well sorted in that department.

This assumes Munich Leg Ends don't get their mitts on it first. Once they do, they'll put a fantastically-high price on it, then refuse to sell it anyway. That's precisely what they've done with the "normal" M1 they've already got....

Have they still got that one..?  I'd heard they had taken one in a few years back with only 8k miles on it but didn't realise it was still there.  Methinks I'll have to pay them a visit and make an offer they can't refuse.
