the secret's out, tetley Dave has bought an E regd 525e in Cirrus Blue. needs a little fixing up before its as clean as Randy's one

Randy's car recently suffered from the "big two". first the cyl head gasket went, then when he fixed that the tranny blew. thats classic cars for you, money pits on wheels

He kept that quiet, does Karen know, lol. When do we get to see pics? I like the "e"s, was looking for one myself at one time, and Wendy wouldn't say no to one.

Is this why my neighbours accuse me of lowering the tone of the neighbourhood?

He whispered the secret quietly in my ear last week, I almost let it slip in a post. Yet to see any photographic evidence of this car, but sounds like a good one. Nice to see another eta in demand.

That pic was taken at new owner before latest's house as I couldn't get the archive to go back any further. The black bottom was on when I got her, she had traces of decals on her sides too..635CSi.

She may have been scrapped by now, I am not sure. I gave her away back in December 04.

Would be nice if she is still alive and well. She was a showroom display car when new from what I was able to find out, had every option available at the time in 1982. And even after 300k miles, everything still worked too.

Sorry lads, I've only just noticed this post. I'm so used to going straight to the 7 series section. Yup, finally got one, but theres a bit of a shopping list to go with it. I need a bonnet, passenger side front wing, rear bumper and one 14 inch BBS x spoke wheel & tyre. I will probably get a set of 15 inch BBS for it, but the priority is the bodywork. Apart from the bonnet ( damaged ) and wing ( rust hole ), it's a really solid car. Inner wings, sills, jacking points and boot interior all good, so there's something to work with. When I collected it on Monday 16th May, it had been standing for ages in the open, but it was bone dry inside, boot as well, so good news there. Someone has ripped the radio out and broke the piece of trim it sits in, so I'll need one of those too. I do have some photos of it, but I still don't know how to transfer them to this forum. I can send them by e mail if anyone's interested. Just let me know. Meanwhile, if anyone can help with the bits I need, this would be much appreciated. It surprised me and my wife how quick off the mark it was. It has a very noisy tappet, but hopefully that's going to be cured soon.

Tetley,

I have a complete blue centre console, I think the radio mount is there. will barter for some of your e23 bits?

has your E28 got a sexy leather sport wheel?

If not, I reckon new radio mounts are still avail from BMW and not expensive. there is also a radio support bracket which is often missing from E28's and holds the weight of the radio. its missing on mine so I will order one.

The car does indeed have a three spoke leather wheel, probably the best bit of the whole thing. There's not much left of the radio mount, just one broken piece of plastic, certainly no support bracket to take the weight. Curiously enough, there's one ashtray missing from the drivers side back door too. Why would anybody take that out?

Dave emailed me some tasty photos of his new toy yesterday, so I've created him a webpage on my site to show them all off. She looks to be a good clean car, aside from the obvious bits of rust. Once it gets the new bits it will be very sweet indeed.

Maybe this is a stupid question.......

525e with a knackered cam (Etas were very prone to
cam lobe wear) which is unique to the 525e and no
other cam will fit. ECP no longer hold stock, £190
plus VAT from BMW.

And needs a body job.

WHY????????

I bought a grey 88E 525e Lux from the auctions last
night as I need a 2.7 short engine for my track car.
Diamond Black, dechromed, OBC, lovely engine and
gearbox, good interior, one wing and edge of bonnet
light bubbling. MOT till september.

Fifty quid plus £11 commission. Add a fiver for fuel
and it's £66 parked in the yard. Drives nice apart
from usual E28 brake shudder.

Christ, there are so many decent E28's for peanuts,
why did you and RubberKnees buy wrecks that need
loads of work..........when you could have just gone
out and bought a really tidy one for £3-400?

WHY???????????????

I'm about to scrap a better car than you're attempting

Does that not tell you something about yourself?!

Take a few minutes to think about that, and where
you're going wrong.

an E28, 'old Son'

Doive, I think your 525e is great. That is such a good colour for them too - is it 'Champagne'?

IMHO, the 525e is the best 80's BMW all rounder that came off the production lines.

Andyboy, why aren't you flogging these vgc e28's? There are lots of 'mugs' like Doive out there!

It also says a lot about you. '88 shadowline/dechromed E28's are I believe rare, so gutting one that could be saved for the engine says a lot! Who's going wrong? You do it your way, we'll do it ours!

As it happens my 525e was my first BMW and I was assured by I thought reliable RAF contacts that it had been fully checked by MTSS and was solid. It also had near FBMWSH, MoT and tax. I paid £300 for it. As a "newbie" at the time I thought I had taken reasonable precautions. I learnt from the experience and moved on.

Andy, I'm not sure how to reply to your comments. Shadowline cars are indeed very rare, but as long as muppets are prepared to break them then they will continue to get rarer. Nothing I can do to stop that, but people like Ian, Dave and I are willing to spend our time and our hard earned keeping three old ladies of the road in fine fettle. As someone once told me: "What's that got to do with you?" If you don't like us doing it, well then that's fine. You don't have to tell us. I don't like you breaking eta cars for their engines to make yet another 2.7 E30 track car, but I don't go on at you incessantly about it. You don't understand why we love old smokers - GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON. You never will get it.

Eta, my car is luxorbeige metallic, not sure what that is in english but the colour looks superb when polished and may very well be one of the best E28 colours IMO. Andy, have a good look at the following picture (sorry to those who have seen this before) and tell me why this car is so bad. You appear to have no problems questioning where we have gone wrong, I'm open minded so care to enlighten me to the error of my ways? Check my website for more photos of my old heaps you can pour scorn over.

Each to their own, but having been in the position of trying to sell cheap tidy e28s and e23s i would have to agree with andyboy. Doive your car(the 525e !) looks tidy and if you paid £150 for it and it has had no major issues, congratulations and keep your fingers crossed!. But tetley and rubberknees i can see your sad t*rds becoming money pits and £7-800 later  still being worthless scrap.  I do hope you persevere  though because i'm just about to dismantle an original e28 alpina b9 3.5 and an e28 M5(24V), both cars are rusty and tired with high mileage and  scrapping them is a much less stressful and financially rewarding option than restoring them and dealing with losers. So if any one wants a mint funky alpina cloth recaro trim, an m5 engine original 16"bbs etc etc pm me.  P.S i've got a mint bonnet and good bumpers tetley if your interested.

Hiab, I don't know if you've seen my car on Doives' website, but the bonnet and wing are the only major issues with it. The rest of the body is solid, I've had a crawl round and can't find any serious rust. As for the tappet noise, I've got a feeling it will adjust out. If it doesn't, then you'll be the first bloke I'll contact for a complete head. I took the photos after I drove it home to Essex from Lincolnshire, I hadn't washed it, it was as bought. It looks better now it's had a bath. Your panels? Course I'm interested. Can I pm you or will you pm me? I'll talk about cars all day long, but please don't get personal like Andyboy did last night. Way out of order. I think I riled him when I called him ' my old son', what he didn't realise it's an affectionate term we cockneys use, or used to.

I have one 3.0cs its the f*ggot auto , i've had it 16 years or so . It has factory a/c and black leather. IT ran and drove well......15 years ago , when it does reappear i'm going to probably fit a motronic 3.5 and a 4 speed auto from a £10 e23!. I'm  not bothered about originality being compromised as coupes are criminally undervalued anyway. It has only had front floors ,n/s front wing, sills and a new bootlid (at my expense ) so by e9 standards it was relatively rustfree !. In my opinion one of the prettiest cars ever, shame they all disolved !.

The 525e Lux is getting scrapped - it needs both
ashtrays emptying and I can't be bothered. Oh, and
rear axle bushes, rear inner sill, two outer
headlamps, 'flickering' instrument needles plus the
other typical old E28 crap etc etc etc. Sorry, but I'm
not putting hours of work into it just to get messed
around by idiots. For £66 it was a cheap 2.7 engine
and I'll not find another as nice as this for so little
(this week).

The cylinder head is off already, good camshaft and
a very fine looking head casting, please read forum rules on selling. I can
guarantee you the noise won't adjust out. Etas were
****** for doing cam lobes.

You've got until Thursday, then it's going in the boot
of the shell up to the 'yard! I'm taking off the
three spoke steering wheel but nothing else as I
don't have room. None of the panels are that great to
be honest. Mond you, it has a superb switchable
auto box. Be a shame to bin that.

Well, it was quite dark when I got it!

Much as I like the 80's cars I can't let one develop into a money pit. I have always enjoyed working on cars but my health will no longer allow me to spend hours on end on no hopers, which was why the 525e I started with reluctantly went.

I don't mind if the cars will never make a profit, or the top ten desirable list, as long as I get enjoyment from owning, maintaining and driving them, which is, I believe, the same way Tetley and Doive feel.

If you wanted to give your 525e a bit more go, a good
mod is to fit a head/cam from a 520i. It bolts straight
on, the compression stays the same but it adds
something like 25 bhp because the camshaft is so
much better. To be honest though, the stock 525e
goes well enough, loads of 'go' from 1500 - 2500
rpm.

It rings a bell, read an article on performance mods on E28's, think it was in Total BMW, will dig through them and find article.

Been and gone - hopefully sold for £250. Had an email from him so should be picking it up soon. The wife doesn't want to be there when it goes but she's happy with the new purchase (apologies for poor pic)

better pics soonest please. can we have some details, like interior colour & leather or cloth etc. gearbox type. audio system. etc etc.

what mods are you gonna do?

No unfortunately, but only has short MOT and taxed until July. Even the clear indicators all round (which are unavailable in the UK) didn't help. No, didn't get overheating issue sorted - still does it if stuck in traffic for long periods of time, but have a nasty feeling that its only the viscous fan as the fan on the 530 is a lot tighter than the one on my E28 (being from GSF and the new car having a bmw item) which is quite worrying. But I made the decision to seel the car when I saw this one come up. Had the money for it and wanted a change.

The new car is auto, cloth interior, and all my audio system from the other car (JVC head unit, SPLX 500W amp, Blitz 1000W sub)

Do you prefer the e34 to the e28? As it's bigger, does it feel bigger to drive, or just as wieldy?

It feels lovely to drive and the brakes feel so much better - I found that when taking my farewell ride in it. I have mixed feelings about which I prefer - would liked to have kept the E28 but couldn't get to the bottom of the overheating issue. With having a young family I got to the point that I had to get a newer car that should last a few more years. Although when Jimmy came to pick up the E28 his first comments were about the clear lights all round and the bodykit - he's only seen one other car with them on and gave big compliments!!Made me very happy but have a nasty feeling that she won't be on the road for too much longer though.

Well I'm staying with E28's! taken 520 off road for some TLC, collected 528 today, rad I took with me was too wide, caused problems. Lots of minor electrical faults, nearside rear window comes down but won't go back up, drivers side rear doesn't work at all. Electric sunroof tries to work but can't quite manage it. Not sure if fan working and I can't get date to set right on ****** trip computer though I got it to tell correct time and read in gallons/miles.

Damaged door is barely noticeable, gentle application of size 8 on inside should do job, has armrests on front seats, interior a little grubby but all ok. Drives fine. Haven't got new cruise control switch yet but can see where it should go, remote selector for trip computer on end of indicator stalk. Wil post pics when I can (or Wendy will come out with digital camera). Generally better than expected!

Good for you Ian!

I've started modding already - clear front indicators. What a pig to fit - took an hour and twenty minutes to do but was definately worth it.

Thanks Paul, each to our own, got plans for E28 but need to get it all running as BMW intended first, lol!

Got a 2nd hand rad with usual plastic overflow stub broken off, took it to local rad specialist to see if they can fix it. Thought maybe they could tap & die a small metal pipe in.

They say no but they may be able to fix it another way. If it works I'll post details as it seems to be a common problem.

Andy,

The wheels are 17" Alpina replicas which I had on my E28. Was not going to let them go with the car when I sold it.

I'dve kept the alpina's as well, they're nice wheels. 528 came with 5 bbs cross spokes (my fave)and good tyres, so won't be changing them anytime soon.

Ok guys, Ian emailed me some pics of his wonderful E28 so I've built him a webpage http://www.atps04.dsl.pipex.com/bmw/otherbmw.htm - here . If anyone else has any pics of their current/old E28 they would like stuck on a webpage, PM me and we can arrange to have them emailed - don't want to post my nice spam-free email address in open forum! A few pics plus a story about the car would be good. I'd like to get details of as many forum E28s as I can.

Excellent, I have one possible taker for the online E28 archive. Be nice to see how many we could get, so step up to the plate lads. Phillip, what about that nice E28 you have floating amongst the E23s?

I must take some scenic pics of my freshly renovated E28. it looks absolutely superb now with new rear bumper & a front wing replaced. all buffed up & gleaming.

I've got a sports interior to go in it, or I may be selling the sports seats to recoup some dosh, as I've spent too much on cars

Finally a decent audio system as the finishing touch, then it will be ready for the summer cruising.

Heres some pics taken after washing ( for some reason they are still poor - whether I'm not keeping still enough I don't know). Andy will take another picture of my wheels and post it on Thursday when I can get to my local library to upload them:

Wow Paul, that is looking seriously sweet. Have never really been a fan of the E34 shape, but that looks superb. Those wheels suit it spot on.

Thanks doive,

Needs a new bonnet though as there are paint blisters. Otherwise, drives sweet and doesn't look too bad. Already have the modding bug though, so I don't think will stay standard for long.
