Hi,

I've recently been given a 1988 E32 730i auto, with 155,000 miles on the clock. The problem is the engine surges between 1100 & 1400rpms when its ticking over.

If I remove the electric plug from the ICV and tap the housing then the engine rpms drops to around 650 and is steady, the minute I push the plug back on then it starts surging again.

Does anyone know where the ICM is situated on the car?

try cleaning the ICV using carb cleaner, and ensure the connections are clean.

There is no idle control module, the ICV is controlled
by the ECU. Basically the ICV is knackered although
you could try cleaning it with carb or brake cleaner
(same stuff). A secondhand one shouldn't be more
than £5-10 from a scrapyard and one from a 525i or
an E30 should do the trick.
It could even be the air flow meter, but try the ICV first.
