What a nice old lass that is. Hope she finds a loving home soon, one that will restore her back to former condition and all for a damn good cause too.

I would also like to see the above go to good home, but go into it with eyes open, it looks good but has been stood for some time, and although it's for good cause they may not know true state of the car.

My first BMW, the 525e, was a charity auction car. It had very near FBMWSH, and they assured me to their knowledge it was solid.

Come MoT it proved to be rotten front to back underneath, though body, interior, engine and autobox were all fine.

I'm not suggesting it was deliberate or that all charity cars should be avoided, but much as I love them E28's can be very bad. Hopefully this one will be as good as it looks and make the charity a lot of money!

That is an e12, so very possibly likely to be even worse than yours Ian! Would be nice to see such a rare beast saved, regardless of what some people think of them (as discussed recently). I've never seen one up close, although I did see a very clean one getting banger raced about eight years ago because it failed the MoT on a bit of welding. Shame.

As you say, rare beasts, I've just bought an engine from one for £5, only prob is it's up near Rhys!

Would be great to think it'll be saved, if anyone wants to the lady with engine has seats(black), bumper, grill and some other parts from her one. Here's list.

"I have a Front bumper in fair condition, but has been painted black but the paint is able to be removed

I have four fair cond doors with electric windows

Radiatior
front grill pre 1980's
black seats
if there is anything else you want ill check if i have them i have lots of things so forgotten what exactly i have"

Wasn't sure what would fit an E28 but was thinking on her asking price of £60 for the job lot in case they helped some one struggling to save  an E12.

Yes!! Lets waste £75 rescuing an undoubtedly
rotten, seized up example of a long forgotten BMW
that wasn't very good even when new.

Hmmm, on second thoughts, lets not let the steel
industry be deprived of another ton of ferrous waste.

I've just bought a 1997 520i Auto (that'll be an E39)
with a blown head gasket for £1000. THAT is worth
rescuing. Scrap like this E12 is just suitable for the
foundry.

Ok, I've just been through most of the 5 series technical forum, and it's the same old same old. "Ah, you guys buy old cars that I think are crap, so I'm going to ridicule you for it and tell you how I plan to spend a small fortune on a car that is much better than yours." Andy, if I wanted to I could buy your E39 ten times over. But I don't beacuse I prefer the looks and driving experience of the older cars. Why paint your house blue if you wanted it green all along?!! That's essentially what you are saying. We want old cars, yet you demand we drive newer, nicer(apparently) ones. And why? To whose standards are we matching up? What expectations are we meant to fulfil?

I'm off to write to Practical Classics to tell them they are all wrong. Why drive an old car when you can have a new one for twenty times the price??

Seems some people only see the scrap value of a car and not the classic it really might be. Such a shame to be so narrow minded and somewhat insulting to come onto a site whose members generally prefer the older models and basically treat the said members with disrespect and those older models with equal disrespect too.

So, if you could afford a ten grand E39 Doive, why are
you driving a 1982 Chevette? Yeah, righto Matey.

As for ten times as much - hardly. I have a brand new
unused 2 litre short engine I bought at a dealer clear
out sale for £80 6 years ago. This car will be fixed
and on the road for under £1500. It's worth £3500
when done. Hmmm, nice reliable modern BMW and
a couple of grand profit. Lovely!

THAT is worth doing.

Buying a scrap E12 for £75, spending the next 3
years welding it back together and selling it for £76,
is NOT worth doing. Only an idiot would do it.

Don't get me wrong ladies, I like a lot of old BMW's. I
drive one every day which is now 16 years old with
225'000 miles - I'm not proud. My track car is a 1989
320i which I bought off ebay for £120 and in which I
have been to the Ring and back.

But unlike you guys, I can differentiate between an
old car which is worthwhile and one which is just a
worthless money pit. But that's why I've had cars you
will never own!

Andy, look I don't know you and you don't know me but I tend to judge by what I see and so far all you ever do is slate other peoples choice in a car. You have no idea what financial limitations they may have or if they just plain prefer to have the older less sought after car. By all means make a point but surely you could try using a little tact and maybe a bit of courtesy too occasionally.

You might not like the cars, but some do and you ought to be man enough to respect that and not shoot people down or insult them.

buy a 1985 528i with a smashed rear door and a

Goldryder - I hear what you are saying and so some
extend I agree - tact is not my middle name.

E28's are fine by me. I actually ran a string of them
and part ex'd my last one, a Royal blue 518i Lux (a
great old car with 210'000 miles) for my 320d. The
main dealer didn't know what do do with it but hey,
he gave me £500 off. I had a couple of 518i's, 520i
manual and auto, one 525i, a couple of 525e's
(probably the best E28 really) and a 528i which was
just stupidly thirsty. Never had a 535i tho.

None of my E28's ever broke down except for when
the gearlinkage fell off my last 518i because the
good who fitted the clutch didn't refit the pin clip. They
all worked for a living up and down the motorway.

My first E28 (I ran seven of them in total) was a 1982
Y plate 525i in Doom Blue. I bought it from an
auction one wintry night in 1989, excited as hell
about my first E28. It had done a spaceship mileage
and had a dented wing but I fixed it up all the same. I
don't hate E28's at all - quite the opposite. Hell, the
E reg 525e is out on the drive looking at me like a
bloody abandoned puppy. As I drove him home last
night it seemed a shame to scrap it so here's an
offer - the first £66 buys it. Is that fair enough?

The thing is though, and my point, is that you can buy
a REALLY GOOD E28 for under £500. By really good
I mean a clean one that drives nicely and has no
issues. These cars are so cheap now that it's
cheaper to buy a good one than it is to try and rescue
knackered rubbish that should be scrapped.

I don't know how I compare age wise to everyone
else here - I'm 37 and consider myself 'grown out' of
the rescuing bangers phase. I've got better things to
do but am clever enough to make my car hobby pay
for itself. Some of you guys should do the same, take
a step back and ask yourselves what it is you're
trying to achieve with non running dented crappers. If
I can buy a decent tidy E28 for £66, so can you.

Your intelligence reports are faulty Andyboy, a rear door is said to be dented but not enough to be seen in a photo, and the engine is not, and never was, cooked.

I don't know if your E39 is worth £3,500 fixed but Ian doesn't like the later models, not even the E34, so if you're relying on him, Doive or Tetley being jealous your going to be stuck with it!

With all due respect Andy, if people choose to buy cheaper and older cars, who are you to critsise them or insult them for making that choice. You might not have done it but that doesn't mean you have to lay into those who do. Its not just tact, its common courtesy and sometimes you definately lack both.

What I don't lack though is common sense.
Oh sure, I HAVE bough crappers and blown money
on trying to fix them. Christ, where do I start? How
about an early E28 520i auto that was known as 'The
One Speed Wonder'. I bought it for £200 about seven
years ago and thought the brakes were stuk on. In
fact, when you put it into drive, it went straight into top
gear. Hills were a problem. Found another gearbox
but on the way back from the breakers the head
gasket went.

At that point I stripped anything useful worth having
off it and got shot of it. So yes, I've been there too. But
the difference is I now know what cars are a
complete waste of time and which ones aren't. I've
been exceptionally lucky to buy an E39 for £1000 - I
won't be getting any more of those that cheap for a
while. But stuff IS out there if you set your sights high
enough.

Tired E28 £100, spend £400 to get it going.

or:

Go out and buy a good E28 for.........£400.

Hmmm, tough call.

Do you not see where I'm coming from?

How much did Philip pay for his black one anyway?
That's a pretty smart one.

With less respect, what do you mean "sometimes" he lacks both. I am pretty physically limited to how much I can do now, but buying, restoring, just working on old cars gives me pleasure.

I don't insult the people who buy a new car and have it dealer serviced, I have always preffered a more "hands on" approach, and as my father was a good, trained motor fitter and he taught me.

If you will take a cheque dated for the first of june I'll have the shadowline 525E for £66, pm me your address and it'll be in the post tomorrow!

Just try and be a little more diplomatic Andy. OK you might have done these cars til you are blue in the face but give those who love to tinker with an old car some credit. You might think it a waste of time, thats your perogative but you shouldn't behave as if they are stupid or dumb just cos they like to buy cars that you probably wouldn't touch with a 20ft bargepole.

You have your ideas and they have theirs, live and let live and you might just get on better on the site and not get warnings and be banned so much. Just engage brain before fingers and look at things from their point of view and offer advice on how to maybe do things better, but you shouldn't shoot them down for making a choice that you wouldn't.

I did try, till he made an unwarranted false personal attack, all I did was put the truth. Fair do's the moddys stopped it. We were all having a nice talk until andyboy started. Since when has "nanana" been grown up! I only tried to take him up on his offer to save a rare car, not because I wanted it, I don't!

You know nothing about me. Matey.

You make assumptions according to what you read in a selection of posts on a forum, this is hardly conclusive proof now is it? Besides, who are you to say what I can and cannot drive?
