I've heard it can be the lift pump rather than the fuel pump?

When you say the lift pump do you mean the pump in the fuel tank and not the fuel injection pump

I believe it's in the tank, yes - it's also a damn site cheaper than the fuel pump!

I read it in the Total BMW mag buying Guide.

Also, give it a couple of seconds when hot before you start the car.  This may help.

thanks for that carl i will have to get the back seat out and have a look .another thought i had was that there may be a tank breather blocked as it seems to also be slow when filling the tank at the garage cheers  steve

The Total BMW guide to the E34 TDS diesel suggests that poor hot starting can be down to the distributor head on the pump. This can't be bought separately, and a Bosch recon is about £800.

Now you have to remember that on these forums, sometimes people talk rubbish - like me!

I've reread the article and the pump is suspect when it's cold starting that's the problem. Hot starting suggests a need for an anti drain back valve. I've no idea if this is relevant to the E36.

I'd recommend a trip to a good independant mechanic before you spend any money on parts.

I have booked the car in for a scan tommorow to see if they pick any faults in sensors or the like .This anti drain back valve you spoke about, have you any idea where it is located and what it looks like as it might be a simple cheap fix to an annoying problem cheers Steve

Not sure if the anti-drain back valve is relevant - this would be positioned beside the fuel filter on the passenger side of the engine bay - you can see if there is fuel in the lines through the clear plastic pipe that brings the fuel to the pump.

There is an E36 325TD/S buying guide on the Total BMW Website, but it's been down for a few weeks now.  I have a copy in PDF format - if you can get me your e-mail address, I'll send it to you.

here we go -took the car for its code scan and code 10 came up,fuel injection timing soleniod,in fuel injection pump-malfunction.This can have several probable causes, fuel filter, fuel pump, air in fuel system, fuel injection timing solenoid.I have made a few phone calls to diesel specialist and all have said that this is quite a common problem with the bmw engine and is likely to be the fuel injection pump(best price for exchange unit fitted £960!)I think I will try a fuel filter change and check out the lift pump and fuel lines before I shell out for the injection pump as the engine will start when hot but not after it has been standing for a while.

Any update on the prob......... I have poor starting when hot too, when it does fire it gives out quite a lot of black smoke, any help would be appriciated!

The thought of shelling out nearly a grand made me look at a lot simpler items as mine would start perfectly when cold but would crank over until the battery was flat when hot .I got a jump start from a peugeot 106 which only has a small battery compared to the bm and it fired up a lot easier.I took a gamble and put a new battery on and this spun the engine over as if you were putting 24v through it, so I think that over a period of time the cranking speed had deteriated without me noticing.Mine also smoked quite a lot before I fitted the battery as it was just pumping the fuel in but not firing.Up to date this has cured the problem, let me know how you get on , cheeers Steve

Nice one Steve, a nice cheap fix. Unfortunatly mine has a brand new battery on it. Cold starting isnt a prob either, looks like I,ll take it to a diesel specalists, theres one in newcastle  called just diesels so hopefully they can help. (mine cranks for about 3-5 seconds before it fires). all my other diesels started as soon as I hit the switch which is why I,m a little worried,

cheers

Mine cranks over for about 3 seconds.but I can live with that. There is a wire disconnected near the front of the engine under the inlet manifold which may have something to do with fuel delivery. This has been disconnected since I've owned the car and it might trick the engine into delivering more fuel when hot aswell as when cold! This sensor is in the head near the heater plugs.
