Hi guys, hope you can help me on this one...

I have a J reg BMW 316i (e36). Lovely car, my pride and joy.

Just a few niggly probs. The engine circs (revs up and down) when started, then settles to about 750 idle.

Also, it seems to be using a lot of petrol, and not really going anywhere fast!

When the oil filler cap is removed and revved to 5k and held, there is blue smoke comming from the exhaust, but not with the oil filler cap on.

Doesnt really use all that much oil tho, in relation to the problems im having.

Cheers,

Andy B

Welccome Andy!
Not sure what year a "J" reg is...

I have a '98 316i (M43 engine) and the engine does do a bit of bouncy revving from time to time, I seems to be worse if I have alot of electrics on... experiment with turning all elecs off (esp. aircon) and see if that helps, my suspicion is that the alternator is slowly giving up (slight squeel from it?).

Not sure what the petrol issue is, have you changed the fuel filter? Perhaps theres a fuel line leak somewhere?

Why would you rev your engine to 5k with the oil filler cap removed????

316i's never go very fast and always use more petrol than you would think! I've got one...

The revving problem might be the O2 sensor, the idle control valve, or an air leak. I'd get a diagnostic done. When my O2 sensor went, the behaved like yours but I was convinced it was the ICV. 2 minutes on the computer at my local BMW specialist showed I was wrong. That saved me time and money.

The sqeal from the alternator might be belt slip.

The blue smoke when oil filler cap is removed is indicative of the valve stem seals and/or guides not at their best. As the engine is pulling oil past them due to the pressure difference when the cap is off.

cheers guys...

have spoken to a friend of mine who was the one who removed the oil filler cap, and held at 5k. He said it looks very much like a piston ring may have gone, as its letting the petrol into the oil.

Also, as said by neileg, he seems to think there maybe an airleak somewhere.

i am going to get bmw to have a look, and see what they suggest... another tell tale sign is the mpg only works occasionally, often after a flat spot in acceleration. I have added some more high-milage oil, although its done 120k, and some stop-smoke oil thickener, so hopefully this should put a temp fix on it. runs quiter now. the squeel on the alternator has passed after spraying with wd40. will get a compression test done too. May look like getting a newer bmw, or engine, or maybe a fiat coupe, cant decide, as i love the bmw. just have to wait and see what bmw says. will keep you posted!

thanks all

That means the belt is slipping and you've just made it worse. Change the belt if you want the alternator and water pump to keep working. Just don't ask me how I know...
