I have a 1985 635 auto with internal electrical problems (see my other posting). DOES THE STEERING WHEEL GO DOWN ON MY CAR, OR ONLY IN AND OUT?, IS THERE SOME WAY OF MOVING IT DOWN TO GET THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OUT OF THE DASH??? I am trying to remove the instrument cluster, and have a series of magazines. I have also looked at the posting from a while back about this (which is in German, and a left hand drive 635), but I just cant get the damn thing out of there. I have done what the articles tell me, but the unit cant be removed. Is there a slightly different procedure on the right hand drive 6's? My steering wheel does not move down, it only moves out - the german website seem to show the wheel in a lower position on the M635 there (is this correct, should my steering wheel move down)? It is all loose, but I cant swing it out, and I especially cant get to the connections at the rear of the unit by tilting it forwards towards the steering column - there is just not enough room there. Please help me!!!! Does the heater controll pannel next door need to come out, and if so is there any more than that one skrew on the right holding it in? Ben |

You can loosen a couple of the nuts/bolts holding the steering column in place to give you a bit of downward movement. I think this is the done thing, I did it on my RHD 6 when taking the cluster out.

alternatively, remove the steering wheel, or place a cloth over the steering wheel and gently manouvre the dash assembly out. This is similar to my e23, and I managed to get the dash out by extending the steering wheel as far as it would go, turning the wheel so I had a large space between the spokes to work from, placed a tee towel over the wheel, and gently moved the dash assembly out! Problem comes when you need to re-install, as you need to plug the odd wire back in, so thin fingers are the order of the day!
Just thought, doesn't the OBC have to be removed on the e24 6? ------------- we're the Sweeney son, and we ain't had our dinner..... |

Nope. OBC is on the centre console section..... and is even harder to get at if you need to remove it, as all the screws are hidden behind all the cladding  -------------

Loosen every bolt? When you try to "unplug" the cluster take the upper edge and try to rotate it , it usually blocks near the upper part of the dashboard....
