keep up the good work Tetley

the clean low mileage 1980 728i has correct original steels with bright trim rings. I have not seen any BM on them rims for many a year.

there has been an ebay glut of 728i's recently. I wonder what the sales ratio was between 2.8/3.2/3.5 E23's

I know I'm an e28 nut these days, but there's a little bit of me still dedicated to the e23. Shame about Rob disappearing, I for one will miss his posts.

Well, they both look tidy, but it's difficult to tell from photographs.

I've just read somewhere that there were only 2000 E23's sold in the UK.

There certainly seem to be plenty of them remaining on the road given the number that appear on eBay.

Why is it that I always remeber that old maxim, "If it aint broke don't fix it" just after I've buggered about with something and made it worse?

The old girl was running fine until I decided on Saturday to act on the MOT inspectors coment that the fuel mixture was a little weak at 0.8% CO2.

I've now got an intermittent misfire, after I reckon to have put things back as they were. Grrrr! At least I've stopped it stalling when I drop it into drive.

The problem isn't really helped by me not knowing which of the screws does what, the hexagonal socket on the air flow meter seems to do bugger all (though the engine does hunt if I open it up too much), even when fully screwed home the engine doesn't miss a beat at idle. The slot head screw connected to the myriad of pipework seems to be the idle speed adjustment.

Any way up I can't get the vacuum meter above 15 inches (or whatever the units are - this shows as late ignition timing but if I advance it then I get more hunting as it is too far advanced (but not according to the vacuum meter).

The plugs have done about 500 miles and everything was fine until I messed around, the rotor arm and dis cap are also about 500 miles old.

Mark, we all know your love for the Red Baron, but wouldn't it be worth taking her off the road for a while, grab yourself another e23 and restore RB at your leisure. That 58k 728i would make a cracking car to run around in until RB is sorted. If you haven't got the room at home, wouldn't your employers be able to find you an e23 sized space where you could work on it?

Good advice Tetley,

If at all possible the RB should be taken off the road so Mark can strip it down in readiness for the body repairs.

All the time Mark is using it daily, he's going to be under pressure to fix it ready for the next days' work etc. Better to park it up and make a really nice job of it.

How is Ian faring with the 732i? I haven't seen him on any forums lately

His Telewest service completely broke down  thats phone & 'pooter

he goes to the Public Library to gain access to the Net.

he loves the 732 as does Wendy, & plans some elec fixes & upgrades. with a replacement f/wing it will be a cracker. I have sourced a f/wing in the right colour but seller wants 60 sovs

I agree but nice ones in the right colour are v.hard to find.

new BM wing is £140 + VAT + painting.

Do you have sources for pattern wings? Rubberknees will be much obliged.

he will have to try the usual used parts stockists but I doubt anyone keeps E23 panels these days.

I do have a pair of glassfibre E23 wings but rubberknees is not sure if he wants to go down that route. might cheapen the car a bit too much???

Ta,

I imagine Ian has plenty on contacts in the trade.

another option for Ian is to buy a Polaris E23 with decent panels & cannibalise it.

We're back, Ian still virus scanning and sorting his out as it's running slow. He has some contacts but can only find E32's. He keeps disappearing into garage but I think he's done more test driving than actual work!

The green 1986 car is rubbish, a track day scrapper.

But the 1980 728i Auto would be nice for £150.

I haven't seen one of those for years

The brakes are in trouble though...££££££££££££

That's just the fuel - average @ 18-20 mpg

I am in need off some pills so I can see the real thing or some better eye wear that stops me seeing mint e23's

the pic is a red herring as the seller uses same pic in many ads.

from Babelfishing the text I reckon its a rear pair only
