Anyone ever heard of the failure of dual mass flywheels on VW 1.9 TDi engines? Our Alhambra has developed a bad vibration at idling and has been diagnosed with a failed flywheel (@50k miles!!!) . Apparently this is not uncommon with high torque engines.

Does anyone know of a VW specialist in the Meath/North Dublin area too. Could be a €1000 bill - and I want to make certain it is the correct problem!

Hi,

This is not uncommon. If you are having it checked get whoever is looking at it to check blocks 13 and 18 in datastream first as this will show up an injector fault, which is also quite common.

Cheers, there are no fault codes at all. Have you heard of mechanical problems with the common rail (PD) injectors that could cause the same thing?

Hi,

These are not common rail and work completely different. The block data I mentioned are not fault codes. On the VAG range the live data is measured in "blocks", 13 covers idle stabilisation, 18 is unit injector status.

I have seen a few with injector problems, a few with engine loom problems, a few with fuel supply problems and a few with dual mass flywheel problems.

Make sure whoever has looked at this knows them well as parts are expensive and lots of mistakes are made.

Any question just ask.

HTH

Alan

Maybe try Bradys in Castleknock, my 2003 Mk4 Golf is in there at the moment with a fupped 6 speed gear box, it has been fully serviced there every 10k miles, and was just serviced 3 weeks ago for its 80k mile service at around 79k, and then the gearbox went on it.

Mine is the 150 TDI and I was told the 6 speed box on them was bullet-proof unlike the 5 speed Mk4 gearbox. I'm awaiting news on it, that is a lot of crap a gearbox going at 80k

Are Bradys a main dealer? The VW engines are great for output but seem to have a lot of component problems. This is my first VW engine after BMW and Opels and I am stunned that something like this has happened.

The 318is has a dual mass flywheel, but is harder driven, is 15 years old (and the design is older still) and has nearly three times the mileage but never has had flywheel, injector nor AFM trouble that the VW is known to potentially have.

Previous two Opel diesels (one had the Isuzu 1.7TD) never gave any trouble.

MDL got back to the stealer and told them they would only cover 70% materials goodwill, The new service manager did'nt realise I bought the car from new off them and it had been fully serviced every 10k with them. He said he will get onto them and appeal it.

Good luck with that. Because I have a Seat, MDL will not be interested. Hispano Cars, the importers, have never even heard of the problem. The car was bought from White Bishop but they are a bunch of muppets - even putting the wrong oil in when they serviced it, twice!
