I don't very often drive my M3 four-up, but on a recent trip to Cheshire with four adults & the sprog I developed a new problem.
Every time I accelerated the offside rear wheel rubbed on the arch slightly. It never rubbed thougth over any bumps. When I checked it, it appears the rear arch is rusting & has bubbled out by about 3-4mm on the inside. Could this bubbling be enough to cause the rubbing? Is the tollerance that tight? It doesn't do it when I'm only 1 or 2 up. Any advice? I'd say space between sidewall and arch is pretty little when the car is fully laden. Don't understand why it's not rubbing on speed ramps though, i would have thought this would magnify the rubbing. Maybe one side of the car was heavier? worn damper? but i'd imagine the rust is causing the problem. One side was heavier as I had baby seat on one side & it was the heavier side that rubbed.
All of the suspension is new 3 months ago with geniune parts so it sounds like it must be down to tight tollerances. Out of interest, how much did you pay to have your arches done as mine is also a 3.0 coupe? Cost me around €600 incl. front bumber respray, so not sure of the break down, i'm in Ireland, so probably not much of a help! | Cost me 80 quid to have both of my rear arches done, caught it really early so it wasnt too bad to sort out.That was done by my local friendly bodyshop man and not BMW dealer. |

Think I'll wait until spring, then get both arches & the front end (stonecatcher) done together. Looks like I'll be using the wife's car for fully laiden trips in the meantime & have to keep mine for fun driving only - shame

As to why its only rubbing on the right hand side, the fuel tank is on the right hand side at the back of the car, hence more weight and rubbing on that side. Pikey ------------- Old enough to know better, too young to care! |

Funny how they thought of putting the tank over to the right. You would have thought to get the 50/50 weight distrbution the tank would need to be in the middle? Pikey ------------- Old enough to know better, too young to care! |
