Could be piston, valve, valve guide , or even head damage, but you wont know until you take the head off, may have missed everything, unlikely but who knows. A dealership repair will probably cost a lot of money, can you say what area you are in? Someone may know a good but independant mechanic who would charge you a lot less. I know one for Worcester, but that will be of little use if you are in Edinburgh etc.

hi nigel,, thanks for reply,, i live in the north east,, sunderland. ive been told to put a new belt on, to check for any damage when started up,, is this the best way, or is it better to inspect for damage,, what damage should i be looking for, and best way to inspect,, ive also been quoted 60.00 to have a new belt to put on, is this reasonable,, thanks

you may be lucky, as the 1.6 has looser clearances than say a 2.5 (I think) so the chances of damaging a valve may be low, especially if it happened whilst trying to start it up as opposed to happening whilst driving at say high revs. Trouble is, you can fit a new belt at £60 & it may be alright, but it may not, and it would have to be taken apart again so that would be £60 wasted, your choice at the end of the day! What mileage is the car? I thought these had to be changed at 40k.

The M40 has an interferance design. You will certainly have bent some valves and may have damaged the head, pistons and even conrods. Do not try to restart - pull the head as soon as you can.

You should budget for a secondhand head as it is probably cheaper than rebuilding your old one.

thanks for your reply,, i have just had a new belt put on,, the engine seems to be ok, it sounds a bit tappety, but it did before the belt snapped, since ive put the new one on, the tappets sound slightly worse, there is no miss fires though, does this mean ive been lucky, and caused no damage, if i put a new set of tappets in, will it cure the tapping sound, or could itr be something else, i would appreciate any replies thanks

But the 316i has hydraulic tappets so cannot have "looser clearances". A compression test will quickly diagnose any poorly seated valves. In my experience, the M40 ALWAYS causes damage when the cam belt goes.

BTW, a tappy M40 means a new cam and followers.

hi there, where can i get a compression test done, if i replace the tappets will this quieten the engine, as it was noisy before belt snapped, what is the best way to check for any damage if any caused by the belt loosing a few teeth, it didnt accutally snap, thanks
