I should be there as normal, Gary with the new 320 will probably pop over from York and our Chris says he will only come if you pursuade Nigel to come this time as he wants to buy some engine bits from him.

See if you can rattle the Wakefield lot.. give Pete W. a bell and I will call John H. to see if he is coming.

Nick.

I'm attracted by the promise of lovely beer, but that means I'll need a driver. Are we allowed to brings wives?

Hopefully, I'll be able to make it on 25th. I've only been a BMWCC member for a couple of months, and this will be my first meeting. In fact, this is my first posting on this forum (I'm 100GRA from the zroadster.net forum).

Whose beer is it at the Barnes Wallace?

Wives welcome, last month Sylv (my o/h) and Nick's young lads g/f were there.

Z Roadsters are specially welcome!

Oh and welcome to the Car Club forum.

Hopefully (fingers crossed I'm not working) I might be able to make it..

Only prob is I can't have a brew since I'm driving - wish you hadn't mentioned it's a free house with lots of guest beers..

Food sounds tempting tho'.

Rhys, BW is at a railway station, but don't know if there's a suitable train to/from York in the evening.  Nice run down some great roads too.

Portions are more than 'man sized'!

In fact, there's another guy, Nicks mate who lives York way, might be a good chance to car share

I think I'll find it - might take a while but I'll get there. I'm right on the bypass (just outside of York) so getting upto the A19 is easy enough.
If I can make it, I could be bringing Ally up as well (as she keeps hinting)

I'm definitely going to be there barring accidents (my first attendance at any BMW meeting), but with a change of plan. Reference my previous post about bringing the wife as my driver, it turns out she can't make it so I've booked in for the night at the Wellington Inn in Howden so that I can still have a drink!

I can leave my car at the hotel, and after a few pints a mile-plus walk back will do me no end of good (OK, if it's persisting down I might get a taxi). It'll be an early start on Wednesday and straight back to the office.

By the way, Rhys, I looked into the possibility of getting a train but it seems the last one out of Howden (certainly to Sheffield and to York, which is where you say your are) is at 7.36pm. The Barnes Wallis is dead easy to get to by road (as it happens, I know exactly where it is). From York direction, take the A19 south to the A163, left on the A163 and just after Bubwith turn right on the B1228 to the BW at the level crossing. Or if you prefer a cross country route rather than the A19, the B1228 goes all the way from Grimston via Elvington and Bubwith to Howden.

StuB - are you one and the same as "stu" on the zroaster forum?

Graham, yes it's me on ZRoadster.net.  I can give you a lift from and to the 'Welly' if you want as it's on my way to the pub.

A few more phone calls and we should have another good turnout.

Was a bit warm in there. Nice beer and the food is filling (remind me not to order pizza )
Next time I'll take a pic so I know who's who, and hopefully the weather will be a bit better.

Thanks all.

It was a good turnout and really nice to see so many new faces.  Perhaps musical chairs would help us all mix a bit better as I always seem to get stuck in the corner!  It was really warm, in fact so warm Sylvia thought about taking her fleece off.

If anyone has any ideas to make it better for future meetings, I'm always happy to hear about it.

Thanks Stu, a good night for Sarah & I. A few more people than last time we made it, so that was good. Sorry for leaving early but it's around an hours drive home for us and with work in the morning, we just had to go. On the up side, the rain had stopped and the roads were clear all the way back.

It can't have been that warm as Sylv didn't seem too keen on you opening that window!!!

The food was good again, but I'm glad I didn't order a Pizza, I'd have had to have a take away box for that one!

See you all naxt time (Hopefully)

Thanks, Stu, and happy birthday!

Couldn't really fault the Wellington for the price (£35). Nothing special, but a comfortable bed for the night (en suite) and a good breakfast.

Took me exactly an hour to get back here to the office (on the far west side of Sheffield) this morning, which was roughly half the time it took me last night!

Thanks for organising the meeting - it was good to meet you all.

Hello,

I've just bought myself an N-1996 323 coupe. I always like to be part of an owners club... I wonder if it would be ok (as am not a member yet) for us to pop over to Howden on 29th?

Only one thing... "She who must be obeyed" has asked if the conversation will be 100% cars...?

I look forward to meeting you all

Jonathan

(and Debs)

Hi Jon & Debs

At least half of the room is 100% car talk as I'm a self confessed petrol head, but my wife always tries to turn the conversation to other things (quite successfully at times too).

You're welcome to join us and we can show you some of the benefits of being members.

The Barnes Wallace to huge portions at reasonable prices as well as real ales (guest beers always on tap) etc. for the none driver.

Cheers

Stu

The Barnes Wallace is one of those homely sort of pubs with a roaring log fire and a small 'library' made up of piles of books on the window ledges.. now these are mainly aircraft and engineering books as a homage to the namesake of the establishment.. there is however, a dog-eared Mills and Boon in amongst them all.. so there is no need for Debs to get bored.

I have another quiz this month (November) and I also have some prizes, kindly donated by local businesses (still working on some more) for the 'winners' (plural) as it's our last meeting before Christmas.

Some 'stuff' from last month;

  • Lots of interest in the NE AGM, 4th Feb 06 at the Fox & Grapes (tbc) on the A64, 2m west of the A1M. <<edited to say 4th>>
  • Only 1 down so far for the Car Club AGM
  • 3 of us willing to car share and get out into the other parts of the North East (if we're welcome guys?).
  • 4 people already keen to be at the National Show, Gaydon 06.
  • 5 volunteers for the Yorkshire Post Car Show in June (date tbc).
  • 1 interested in Tatton Park show
  • Croft (11th year) 4 of us (including Nick) interested.  Dates tbc.
  • Article submitted for one of the Car Club magazines.

Hope to see you all there on Tuesday.

Ok, so where was everybody? Eight hardy souls turned up last night, with my better half making up the eight. I only conned her into going (her first visit) with the promise that there would be other wives/girlfriends to chat to. It's a good job Sylvia was there, otherwise I would have been in the doghouse!

Anyway, it was a great pint and a half (I was the driver) of Timothy Taylor Landlord, and the scampi was excellent. Peta pointed out that we paid the same for a pint AND a large glass of red wine as we pay for the wine alone at the White Swan in Pickering!

The Murphy's was absolutely spot on and complimented the pancakes very nicely

I enjoyed a good old natter with everyone too, especially about how crap X3's are

Anyway, I'll have a quiz or something similar lined up for next month.

Howard, hope you get well soon and the staff at the Barnes wish you a speedy recovery (apparently their takings were down last night)!

The ages range a fair bit.  I am 33, my Girlfriend is late twenties. There are people both older and younger, but they all seem to be good company.

Only way to find out for sure is to come along. The worst that can happen includes having plenty of good food and a drink or two!

As said, we have a wide age range really, but a common interest in our cars and car related 'stuff'.  It's not a pipe and slippers meeting, we haven't had any whist drives if that's what your worried about.

Come along, have a pint and a meal and see what you think.  We'll do our best to make you welcome.  Drop me a line if you want to know any more.

    Cheers

    Stu

    Stu,

Thanks for an entertaining evening, even if my score on the Quiz was really bad!  Sorry we had to scarper early, but we were both tired already and had a long drive to go.

The food, as before, was good. And I did eat it all, so do you owe me a Pudding?

    Look forward to next time,

    John.

    I'll remember that one StuB!

Meantime, anyone interested in attending the autojumble at Harewood House on either the 30th April or the 1st of May forget it as it has been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.

I'll be at tonight's meeting, all being well. Can't persuade the missus, though,

First time I will actually have attended a meeting in the Zed - in fact, it'll be virtually the first time this year I've had it out of the garage, apart form the odd short spin on nice winter's days and a trip down to Sytners a fortnight ago for its annual fettle.

I've never known a spring when I've been so late using it on a regular basis - it's just not been the weather for it. They were still gritting the roads around here a week or so ago. I'm off to France next week, but we're taking a couple of friends so it won't be in the Zed unfortunately.

It was good to be there last night, and a great first outing of the season for the Zed on a lovely evening - hood down all the way there. Not sure who enjoyed it most, me or the car.

Stu - I'll keep my eyes peeled for a possible pub drive venue.

100GRA your little trip to france is it a booze run?

Nah, never touch the stuff (he lied).

No, I might bring a case or half a case of wine back if I see anything out of the ordinary, but I don't make a point of loading up with the stuff. Anyway, with four adults plus luggage in a Freelander, plus all the food 'goodies' which my wife always insists on bringing home (including cheese which stinks the car out), there isn't a lot of space left.

Having said that, when just my wife and I go over in the Zed, one trick we have found is that you can get five or six litre bottles of Gordons gin laid in a line alone the back edge of the boot. Because the boot narrows towards the back, when you put a decent sized case in there's a shallow gap behind it which is only big enough to shove things like shoes or bottles of gin!

Next meeting is 25th July, which will start at 7pm for a few sarnies, then a drive out to hook up with another BIG local car club meet (North Yorks Lotus Owners Club), near York.

We'll be setting off at 7.30 for a bit of country lane mileage on the way.

Please let me know if you're coming as I need to arrange the grub.

Also negotiated 15% off labour BM Tec ( http://www.bmtechull.co.uk - www.bmtechull.co.uk ) for car club members if anyone near Hull needs a service.

Are they the ones that need more than one table in the pub to all fit round?

The pub in question is indeed the 'Buckles Inn' on the east bound side of the A64 a few miles west of York

We all had a lovely time with Nyloc at the Buckles after some fantastic sandwiches from Kieran at the Barnes Wallis.  The Lotus guys made us very welcome and had a massive turnout, something to aspire to in the coming years.

Be nice to see you all at the next meeting.

    Well, another month another meeting.

    Anyone coming along?

It seemed that there were only 6 of us for the run out west and it also seemed that I went to the pub along the road form the one recommended, so at some point in the future we'll also try the one IN Hirst Courtney

Anyway, all welcome and it'd be nice to see some old and new faces along.

    Cheers
