On paper, the performance of the 184hp unit isn't that far down on the 3.5s. 0-60 allegedly came up in 9.1 seconds (manual), but the BIG difference was in the auto, which had to make do with about 11secs to get to 60. Diesels are quicker than that! Fuel consumption was allegedly slightly better than a 3.5, at a theoretical 41mpg, but only in manual form. But all that weight for the 2.8 to heft around..... now you know how the US market felt! I'll stick to the 3.5, thanks -------------

628's are fine if:
1) they're mint 2.) under £1500. Otherwise don't bother. They're worse on fuel than the 635 and the 2.8 has to work quite hard. It costs the same to run as a 635CSi making them slightly pointless. They look a bit gay with the 14 inch wheels and no spoilers too. I wonder who is dumb enough to buy the new 630i when the V8 is only £5000 more? At that sort of price level, might as well be hung as a sheep........... ------------- |

628s generally come unencumbered with toys etc which usually makes them a bit lighter than a typical 635. Also, they all run L-jetronic. Post '85 (I think) they have ABS. L-jet engines are easier to tweak than motronic ones, as you can adjust the ignition timing separately without recourse to a computer, and messing with BMW's code (which has never been released for public consumption). So in my view a 628 makes a good platform for various tuning experiments, whilst not costing a bomb to start with. -but thats just me..... cheers

Depends how hard you're going to drive the car. If you just potter about then a 628 will be fine. In it's favour a 628 is ususally a lot cheaper to buy as everyone convinces themselves they need a 635. As they were originally bought by people who wanted the style without the need for the extra 34bhp they generally had an easier life. Many 628's look to have been better looked after too. Well said! But did anyone see that (quite tidy) blue 628CSi at Donington today......£3950!! He must have been on some wicked powder to think it was worth that. You can buy a Highline in the same condition for £4000 so I doubt it was sold. If £1500 or £2000 is your budget, then yes, a mint 628CSi is better than the usual £1500 rubbish heap 635. No Metrics either  ------------- |

Whose was the old black six at Donington today. My 18 yr old daughter though it was very cool. Saw the umbrella on the rear parcel shelf and imagined it to be the sort of car John Steed of the Avengers may have driven. If you read the carefully cut-out CCW feature he's stuck in the o/s rear window, you'll find he originally wanted £4950...... Still, anyone who wears a cravat and a moustache is going to find people having a pop at him eventually!!
There was a 1988 zinnobar red "Highline" in the car park, on sale at £4750. This car is known to me. Current owner has had it for about a year - he is partially disabled (though you'd never guess it, as he's adapted to it well) and needed the auto transmission. It's even got a proper late Eighties / early Nineties in-car phone mounted between the front seats. Only things wrong with it are tiny rust bubbles starting to show on the n/s/f wing panel....

Actually I could be talking thru my bottom, I think the car might have been a 3.0 csi. Loads of chrome and loads of wood veneer inside, very gentlemans club style. That was indeed a 3.0CSi, 1974 on the N plate. Such
a great looking car. I saw a really straight red Highline on an F plate at Gaydon for sale £3950, no rust.......but it had done 170'000 miles and still had Metrix. Still a nice old tram for four bags though. Cravat Man was at Donny last year with a 1970 2800CS - for a mere £6000. But to be
fair it was a Sith Ifrican import with a superb body. ------------- |
