Hi all, I think i know the answer but just wondering if any one can confirm. I Seem to be getting a screeching noise from the power steering and sometimes the steering wheel even Jercks while turning. Im thinking loose belt although it seems ok (im no expert) I say belt because it sounds very much like a loose Alternater Belt Sounds. What do ya think.

Check that first, and eliminate it if need be. Is the PS fluid level also as it should be? -------------

| Hello Horseten, have checked the PSF as described in my owners handbook i.e pumping the break until the fluid rises.(It does rise to the top as apparently it should)? |

Off to my Mechanic on Monday. Speeking of Mechanics horse you seem to be the BMW man, have you herd of Cooks ferry in Enfield as i live there i would like to use them, but i have herd they are a little Expensive? |

Get him to check the PS pump as well as the belt. Apparently these can go a bit "off".
Friend of mine bought his Highline via Cooks Ferry. They're OK from what I've heard, but for anything to do with my Six I prefer to go to my preferred mechanic Carlos in East Acton. He's done everything on my car from 3000-mile oil/filter changes to fitting a new cylinder head casting....... -------------

| I had an issue recently with the PS pump. It used to make a schreeching/whining noise from cold and would clear up until I was going from lock to lock whilst parking. Cut a long story short, had the belt changed and the fluid level was fine but the noises continued. About two weeks after the belt change the bottom hose exploded during a tight parking maneouvre. Replaced that and the sound went. Weird. |

I must confess i never made it to my mechanic as all the symptoms stopped, but reading about yor explosive hose, i will definitely have to go for a checkup. Cheers |

If it helps: my issue was where the rubber hose joins the metal collar at the PS pump end of the line. It is the longest of the two hoses (it goes to the brake accumulator) and I can't for the life of me figure why the impending failure made the noises it did - and why the noise was as intermittent as it was. It was relatively easy to change, but a fiddly job. The downside is three-fold: in my case the 'explosion' left ATF all over the engine bay; the car was left unservicable; and the new part was getting on for £100. |
