Having had hassle over alarms & Thatcham specs etc with Carole
Nash, I've decided there is no point in pursuing re-activation of the
originally fitted BMW alarm system. It plays up.....  So, what do you guys recommend, hopefully from personal experience in protecting your pride and joy?! Something that is easy to use, will operate my central locking, not be too sensitive, not eating my battery & most of all, not cost a fortune to be supplied & professionally fitted - providing the required 'thatcham category' approved installer certificate. Must have an immobiliser & interior sensors. Ideally full closure type, raise electric windows, close sunroof etc. All E24's as we know do not have one touch windows. But the full closure BMW alarm on our E34 works with the rear windows which are not one touch on closure. I'd like to think that one touch on the alarm remote will do everything as above, close windows/sunroof, etc What sort of price did you pay for your chosen alarm inc professional installation? Ebay features plenty of new boxed alarms, but I cant see many approved installers wanting to fit an alarm they havn't supplied..... TIA.

Give 01242 679222 a call - company is called Motor-Mods, and tI have used them to fit the alarms to all by BMW's (E30 325iSE, M3 & 318is.) I'm not suggesting you need to use them - as they are not exactly local to you! - but they are very helpful, knowledgeable, efficient, reasonably priced and recommended! ------------- Cats know your every thought. I have a toad on mine which has been on now for three years with no problems. Had it fitted by Hartlake who i have now fallen out with, but have a local Hifi alarm shop near me who is very good. I think i paid around £300 for mine fitted. Mine has anti hyjack that closes the doors after ignition, but i would not recomend full closure on the windows as our old cars motors strain at the best of times. Have left the car for three weeks and it's started first turn so not to bad on the battery. Any good local hifi shop should be able to fit one and if you ask around you should get a competitive quote. Look to pay around £300 - £400 depending on what gismo's you want. If you want remote starting and the lights to turn on you can have it, but it costs you more.

Cheers James! I thought total closure would be really cool on the 6! At least it would ensure regular motor use, I always thought it was lack of use that killed them....... ------------- My 635's.

| I have just had fitted a Clifford Concept 650, which has all the mod cons including total closure, remote start, anti jack etc. This was £400 fully fitted. |

Ive got a Toad as well A1606- seems not to drain the battery much either, and my car won't get stollen - especially since its not working at the moment anyway! Paid £110 on ebay - benefit is that the control box fits inside the car, and is not exposed to the elements. Im happy with it.
I didnt get any of the remote start/ headlights on control, since the car really doesnt get enough use to justify it. Headlight ON would be useful to find your car in a car park at night, but not anything else as far as I can see other than impressing your mates down the pub (remote start in this category too). Total closure seems like a good idea at the time - but I agree that old motors struggle - and they are going to burn out regardless, and |I think this will push them harder in their old age, as opposed to giving them a bit of use. I am a firm beleiver of keeping things simple, but thats just me. -------------

Got two alarms, but one of them (mid-1980s state-of-the-art) takes only three days or so to drain the battery..... Not worth the effort. Would much rather spend the money on tyres/suspension/doing that cancerous wheelarch.... -------------

I looked at the Autowatch site, rang them to find a dealer in my area (who is in Worcester), then rang the chap - Mark Webb. I mentioned the Toad systems to him, he also supplies & fits TOADS as well, but said in his own cars he fits the Autowatch products. He says in terms of reliability there is nothing between them. Autowatch kit comes with a 2yr guarantee. Supplied & fitted in my car on the drive, including removing the old system, programming any particular features I want, he quoted me £275 inc VAT. He did say prices vary a little from area to area. There is another dealer in Warwick who quoted me £315+VAT for the same system!! Alarm/immobiliser thatcham cat 1 fitted today - took 3.5 hours!!!! I wished I'd taken a photo of the pile of boxes & wiring he removed from above the glovebox!!! Old phone kit, two old alarms, one old immobiliser & various other old electrical crap! Some badly connected so I was told. All new joints soldered & heat-shrunk, most impressed with quality of service. Remote fobs (2 supplied + 2 special 'keys')are excellent, seem very durable & logically designed, I cannot see a way of accidentally operating them in pocket! My alarm also locks all doors the moment igntion operated, unlock on switch off. My highline is officially lighter this evening!!! ------------- My 635's.

I always find that taking the wheels off and leaving her on stands for weeks on end is ample deterent I really need to put her back together again (and stop taking bits off and leaving them on the kitchen floor too) |

which leads me to a funny story about what I did yesterday evening. A true Herbie moment..... My banger (mk2 golf) has a dodgy handbrake.... I innocently jumped out of the car so I could read a sign at the top of a coastal defence dyke (hill) in Essex. I turned around and the car wasn't there Looked left and looked right and there she was, door still open and engine still running gently rolling towards a very large drainage ditch, the kind of ditch you dump stolen cars in if you're from Liverpool. Fortunately she had the sense to stop and wait for me (about 1m short of certain doom) This is neither funny nor relevant to the thread but is vaguely derogatory about Liverpudlians, so I'll post it... btw my 6 has no alarm or immobiliser, nor can I find any trace of one ever having been fitted. quite odd I thought |

LMAO!!!! Your Golf could have ended up in a very deep bunker by the sounds of it!! Whilst I don't for one minute think mine would be pinched, I do however have the satisfaction in knowing that if some idiot ever tried they'd have more of a hard time than a 6 without!
