Anyone had experience of winter tyres on an E34 Touring (or similar). My tyres are getting a little long in the tooth, although legal and I'm off to deepest South Germany for Christmas.

Last year I drove a VW Passat on standard all season tyres in German snow/ice/wet and although I consider myself a cautious driver in bad conditions, with a full car (family etc) it was no joke. 5 hours in very poor conditions with the car twitching on quite a few occasions had me really thinking about tyres for this year on my E34, any suggestions?

I know winter tyres tend to have a deeper tread and the rubber/silicon compound is different for the lower temperatures but thats about the limit of my knowledge.
