i thought "car speculators" (people who order cars then sell their place in the queue) were meant to sell at over list price so they make money out of it

this guys got it all wrong

Current waiting list is 2 years????

He's a liar!!!

You can have about 20 of them, brand new, without miles, tomorrow if you want!  There are an absolute hoard of cancelled orders left over from when the price was confirmed.

Apart from the one I test drove, I have since been offered another two!!!!!  No mileage, ready for tomorrow.

Plus, they're dropping money already because of the fact they're not moving.  There are a few people (speculators) who have had their pants taken down on the M6...big style.

Now if this was 10-15 years ago it would be easy to make a fast buck on a purchase such as this.... how times have changed.

Nope.

They're simply not selling at the moment and there are a lot of people getting very nervous about the money they're dropping.  I know of one guy who took his back to the dealers 3 weeks after buying it.

The list price he paid including options was just under £89k.  He was offered £70k by the dealer.  £19k - in 3 weeks.  Nice.

That may be a rather drastic example but there are very strong rumours of BMW slashing the list price soon anyway.

weird.... i wonder why it hasn't turned out to be a success, it looks great from most angles (shades of e46 ci on the side profile) and i haven't read a bad review yet

maybe as you say it's just too damn expensive for what it is, i wonder if the m5 is suffering a similar fall in residuals?

The M5 is doing the opposite and is holding very strongly indeed.

There are a few used examples around but they're close to list price and the waiting on one if you ordered today is still around 6 months minimum.

...and the Z8. Apparently first on sale at £86k, it very quickly came down to £80k.

There was one Z8 advertised in "The Times" yesterday at £42k. So, if you've got cash burning a hole in your pocket, you know what to do....

...and indeed Jeremy Clarkson has done just that.

He now drives a new M5.

Which was a surprise as I thought the GT40 suited JC down to the ground - Fat, Loud, Thirsty.....

I bet he has no problem with the i-drive etc also despite the shenanigans during the TG review

Top Gear is DEFINATELY non-scripted.  I have a friend who has been on numerous occasions because of contacts he has and he assures me it's all off the cuff and 'as it appears' stuff.

Incidentally...I believe he has indeed got the Ford GT back too.  The M5 is his daily drive....

Mostly agree with you, the 8 was eventually a sales failure when the recession hit, but at least it did a have real waiting list in the beginning!

..."While the tests were still in progress, the BMW 850i was presented to the public in the beginning of September 1989 on the IAA in Frankfurt/Main, Germany - with stunning success. 5000 orders have been placed within the eight days of the motor show alone, before the car was even ready for production, which started in the beginning of February 1990 in Dingolfing (14 days later as planned). If you had ordered a car back then you would have to wait three years for it to be delivered. "   e31.net

How much do you reckon the M6 will be worth in a year?

Cheers Skip

top of the range BMW coupes either sell on the back of real/perceived sporting prowess, or on bling/luxury.

Successful BMW coupes have done better on the former than the latter; e.g.

 E9 -racing CSLs assured its reputation;

E24-started out more show than go, but touring car wins (635 with M30 engine) plus M-car gave the model a sporty lift.

E31 -bling/luxury out and out

new 6er; no racing = no street cred?

BMW coupes have always been more expensive than any comparable saloons; M6 vs M5 isn't much different in percentage terms from what has gone before (although you can buy a VW golf on the difference...).

If the M6 were demonstrably much faster than the M5, it wouldn't be an issue; as it is, its only a bit lighter, some of the gadgets are a bit different, and thats it. Round a race track there won't be a big differential between them. Not £20k worth, anyway...

I think they might get away with +£10K over the M5 with this model, and that a genuinely much lighter and much faster version (say with 200kgs less, 600bhp and race wins under its belt)  might command a £20K premium.

The V10 engine is nice enough, but lack of F1 wins, plus an upcoming F1 regulation change (back to V8s) take the shine off it big time.

To make matters worse, the older V8 engine can be tuned for the road (eg supercharged Alpina) to give the same power, but with a fatter torque curve. And it is lighter.

my two pence worth....

cheers

I agree Brucey.

With an M5 starting at £63k the M6 at £70-73k would have been much more realistic..

In terms of the earlier question as to how much a year old M6 will be worth, well early forecasts are saying they're unlikely to dip below £68k.  It probably is a case of all the money going on the day you pick it up.
