If you aren't tethered to a dealer for any reason, there are German car specialists out near Malahide, Autocheck. Tel 846 4110.  I found them to be great every time.

Hi

I recommend Furleys. They resprayed my e30 cabriolet colour change from white to sliver in May 01. All panels outside/inside done, inside boot but leftout engine bay due to expense. The paint work is still imaculate.

Incidentally I'm on the lookout for a silver 635csi in vvgc and will be selling the cabriolet 320i Sliver, blue hood, blue leather, 83,000, Wind shield to make space for this as living in Dublin city

For those in the Mid West, I can vouch for John Roche listed in the contacts.  He's in Gort.  When I got my e30 325i in April I wanted it gone over with a fine tooth comb to get it from 98.5% to 100%.  I dropped down to talk to him and see what he was like.  He has the wall papered with BMW training certificates so he knows his way around them.

His took loads of time to look it over and advise on work needed before we agreed to do anything.  He did go though it with a fine tooth comb, including all belts, exhaust back box, inspection service, rocker and sump gaskets (tiny leak from sump gasket), tappets, checked all bushes, ball joints, track rod ends, replaced a couple of gearbox mounts that were showing their age and more right down to a couple of broken clips on the front spoiler.

It took a little time because not too many places are carrying some of the more unusual spares in stock (took 2 weeks for Keogh's in Limerick to do a similar job on the e30 convertible a few years ago).

Cost was over €800 but only about €200 was labour.  Great value for money.  If you have a toy you love, he's well worth the trip to look it over for you.

Pity is, I only had it back 2 weeks before dozy mare in MPV, etc.....

have to ad in

Stewarts Garage, Sherriff St, Dublin 1 for bodywork - they do all the work for Maxwells. Ph 8553521.

Been going to them for years - haven't found a better level of service or value anywhere else. They even tell you not to do work if it's not required or there's a cheaper way!

There is a guy in Liosban Business Park, Tuam Road, Galway who specialises in German car parts.  Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the company as I've never had a German car before so never needed parts before!  For those with local knowledge, they're about 100 yards from Barry Motors (the BMW garage) on the way toward the County Council impound yard/dumpsite.

Posted By: Dergside

I used GSF in Dublin for the first time this week, ordering a cat for the 523i.  I called them on Monday and ordered.  They told me they had the cat in stock but had to order in an additional bracket overnight.  Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) I had a message from DHL to say they were delivering the part at my house.

I mentioned the club membership and its listed on the invoice but the rate of discount isn't shown.  The guy said they would offer it at trade price and it looks like roughly a 10% discount from the price they mentioned before I mentioned the club.

Happy with that.  Cat, bracket and courier delivery for something like €340, delivery being €15.

I got Hella Angel Lights for my 520 from Otto in Galway this morning; 2 headlights + 2 wirings kits = €624.36 incl Vat.  Mentioned the club, but they told me the lights were usually €270+Vat each and wiring kits €38+Vat each.  Had quoted me €220/€38 even before I mentioned the club.

you could try fahys in oranmore.  got mine down there recently, inspection 1 and oil change for €110.  they had tried to contact me to tell me that they were changing the brake pads, when they eventually did i told them that i had a new set in the boot and was waiting for discs they took off the new ones and replaced the old ones with no hassle and no charge either.

A BMW specialist garage local to me in northern Ireland has done all the work to my car.  Put in a suspension kit (forgot to tighten up one of the rear shocks and reconnect the rear speakers).  Put in a replacement fan last year then another in the summer then another the next day. The car overheated on the way home, when I got home and pressed the button to lock the doors the alarm sounded a constant squeal.  Next day his assistant who says he doesn't like BMWs said the fan was fine and the head gasget was gone---'Time to send her down the road' he said 'You'll need to take the car to a spark to have the alarm fixed"  The third fan went in and the overheating problem was cured.   They fixed the alarm by turning it off so now I have no remote locking etc.  Replacement radiator (cable tied in and instrument panel always bongs stating coolant low even if its full).  Replaced wing mirror (fell out next day replaced free).  The owner is friendly and easy to pay and will always go out of his way to help you out and I think HE is a good mechanic.  I have also had my clutch replaced cheaply £225 with no problems over 2 years ago.  I have spent £750 on my Bilstein suspension kit, it rattles and veers to the left and right on bumpy roads.

I think if you want to keep a car forever then spend a few extra quid and have it well looked after.  My car has been really cheap to keep on the road over the last few years but it is fast approaching the scrap yard.

Andrew

Is there a contact number for him somewhere? or should I trust the yellow pages?

Savo, no offence but sounds to me that bloke is having a laugh at your expense... BMW Stealers here (Barry Motors) messed with my alarm here where I eventually had to change it but with the small claims court facility in the south, they also paid for it...

No expert on these matters as new to the forum and getting used to my beloved e39.  I was quoted €1300 from a dealer this week to replace some sensors and thermostat and a couple of other jobs.  They also couldnt do for a couple of weeks.

Got same jobs done at bmwcare (found details on this website) and saved myself more than €600 and job was completed within 24 hours.

I would highly recommend and will definitely use again.

I read that Maxwell Motors are parting company with BMW.  I believe there are a few other dealers going to follow suit. Apparently the BMW requirements are too stringent or restrictive.

Try Martin Reilly in Sligo - worst customer service I have ever encountered which is ironic given their outrageous labour rates - €115 ph+vat.  Oh and they even had the cheek to overcharge me - labour of €30 to put in a €24 microfilter and €30 for a vehicle inspection - queried these - both errors and not even an apology from the rude service person!  Unreal.

I have two good contacts for what it is worth:

My Brother in Law repairs alloy wheels and wheels in general and is very good at, probably the best around! may save you a few quid.... You can get him at 087 6365704 (Greg). He also sells alloys - Tyres and so on and has a very extensive range at Carfit in Toughers Business Park in Newbridge.

Another Pal of mine works for Himself and specializes in Paintless dent repair and without doubt is the best there is out there at this game, coming from a Panel Beating background and into this, he has become very popular indeed and reliable and trustworthy. His name is Bob Millist and works throughout the midlands .... I know he is popular with one or two car clubs, so it's possible you know about him already! 087 9455182 He actually fixed up my E39 which looked like Magillacuddy Reeks when I bought it ... to look at it now, it is impossible to tell so I was very impressed to say the least.

Both Digweed and myself will vouch for his work; we've both been using him for years, and have recommended him on here several times.

One of the toys he does is a Xenon upgrade; he put it into out work van, and it makes a huge difference!  Not too expensive either!
