Had the auto-electrician around today... The first thing noticed was one of the white plugs was out just above the ECU. Next, we tested the various pins of the ECU, and there was no pin 18 on the big white 35 pin plug, and about 4 or 5 others that are quoated in the literature (and by some of you guys) were not there. (I can let you know which ones these are if anyone's interested, but ill have to check on the car itself). So, we started checking various continuities and earths, and it became apparent that something was odd... no volts during cranking at several wires, but every one had continuity and/ or earth, so we checked the fuel pump relay and DME relay again, and they were the wrong way round. This must have been the original auto electrician, as I have never touched them, and I couldnt beleive it. Also I double checked one of the old flywheel sensors, and have conformed that it was faulty..... so the problem was in fact 3 fold. From what I can deduce from the timing of events is that the old electrician correctly identified a faulty flywheel sensor, and then replaced the two front relays the wrong way round for me, and so when I did replace the flywheel sensors; It was if the original problem was still there, and gave rise to all this messing... Bummer. But at least its running again, and the alarm and stereo work perfectly, so Im happy, if not really frustrated with the first electrician. So thanks to all of you who put in the time to both help me, and indeed insult me, I really appreciated the former. It appears that several of you were all right. Yeah, by the end I used to run home and check who was throwing verbal abuse at me.
Maybe you could read my bank statements and total how much cash I have laid out on bits for the car since it started last, cos im not going to look. -------------

Thanks for bringing the car round tonight, Ben. Sounds grand already, and I can see the grin spreading across your face in the dark! Glad Carlos was able to resolve things for you - I told you he was good No doubt there'll be a few opportunities to go up the M1 in tandem one weekend and burn off all the stress that has been building up since the end of August. Have to get to the bottom of our next mutual problem: the courtesy lights not working when we open our doors -------------

Im sure thats an earth fault on the switches in the doors that have become corroded. Both of the lights work when the switches are turned on, but not when the dpprs are opened; so it looks like a switch problem. -------------

glad you have got it sorted out.... bit of a sod by the sounds of it.... re the other problem- I believe there is a control module for the interior lights, and this could be duff... cheers

OK so, I drove through a large puddle near the stables tonight. The courtesy lights are now back on. Wait.... it gets better, this.....
....now they won't ****in' well turn off when you shut the doors! -------------

No no no, the manual switch is fine. The lights go off when you move the switch to "centre". It's just that when you set the switch to "courtesy" and then open the door, the light goes on (as it should), you then close the door and it stays on (as it shouldn't) -------------

| The door operated courtesey switches are notorious for corrosion. The good news is that they are as cheap as chips and esy to replace - go on, treat yourself. |

I can hear the relay switching on both door operated switches when I push them, I was wondering if it could be the switches on the clear lens of the courtesy light themselves... But how likely are both sides to be broken....exactly! -------------

they're supposed to stay on for a while. mine are quite erratic also, sometimes they switch off when I turn the key in the ingnition, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they turn off when I lock the doors (from the outside) and sometimes they don't. my sisters VW had teh same problem, taking it all apart and putting it back together again worked for the golf..... -------------

Really pleased that you've finally got to the bottom of your non-starting issue Ben, indeed highly frustrating! Have to agree that all the info that has been passed over should be published in some form or other, an e-book perhaps? Courtesy lights - havn't had the problem so can't offer much advice, other than to check everything with a multi-meter, continuity etc. HOpe you also resolve this one soon. Btw, I'd be tempted to speak to the auto-sparky that caused much of your woes & get him back to fix your courtesy lights issue out for FREE - the least he can do for you I'd have thought. Then again, you probably don't want him anywhere near your car again - just thinking of your bank balance, thats all Ben! Btw, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!! ------------- My 635's.

Dave, unfortunately it doesnt work like that in London! But I have let him know what he did, and thats all I can do. Anyway, the car works and it could have cost me far more, had the gearbox had to come out for the flywheel teeth to be replaced, luckily it was a straight forward fix. Thke care, -Ben -------------
