Hi

My 520i really shakes badly when I take it above about 60mph. I've had both sets of wheels balanced but the problem still remains. My garage has suggested that the rear tyres are slightly out of shape. Does this seem like a reasonable explanation or does anyone have any other thoughts. The tyres are the standard issue - nothing fancy or wide. Help would be much appreciated as I bought the car specifically for long comfortable journeys and this is not really happening for me at the moment.

Thanks
Jim

Does the vibration disappear at a higher speed or is it there all the time? You could try a different garage and get them to rebalance the wheels again and see what they come up with. The few times I've had viration were down to balancing and once where two wheel bolts had come loose.

The vibration does seem to disappear at 80mph although the car doesn't feel particularly stable on the road at this speed.

I bet it is your steering box.. especially if you have ruled out roadwheel problems.

.. old tyres can get flat at the bottom where they have been stood.. the vibes disappear though as the rubber warms up.

.. does the car 'wander' instead of keeping to a straight line.. if it does then it is the box.

Jim

Also check the usual suspects - tracking, bushings, tie rods, condition fo front tyres.
Also check your front dampers as the e34's tend to go through front dampers more so than other bmw's

I had the same problem with my 530i..Runout on front Discs. (warped)Changed the Disc`s which cured the problem, failing that, possible its either the top or bottom control arm bushings.
