Here's a weird one for ya :-)

In the E39 there are 2 watertanks for the windscreen wash, standard and intensive. When you push the button on the end of the stalk you get the intensive wash. I ran out of water in my standard tank but had plenty of water left in my intensive tank. When I pulled the lever for standard wash, nothing happened as expected but knowing I had plenty in the intensive tank I used that but again nothing happened!

Once I filled my standard tank up again they both worked? how do these work does anybody know, does the intensive wash just add some mixture to the standard tank?

the intensive wash looks like neat green washer fluid (i havent run out yet so ive never needed to buy any) so i would assume that, yes, its used in conjunction with the normal diluted screenwash for your screen and for your headlights

makes sense...

I must use the proper stuff in there then not pure fairy washing up liquid (lemon fresh) eh?

Must get round to removing the fuse for the headlight wash, what a waste of time they are (and fairy!)

i was disappointed with the headlight washers, i was expecting little wipers to come out of some hidden recess

oh yeah, and what is the bloody point in having xenon dips and halogen mains?!?!  they should be all xenon!!   it looks weird as hell having white/purple outside lights and yellow inners

anyway, back to topic

The washer system works like this-

The large tank should be filled with a normal mixture of water and screen wash and the small tank filled with neat BMW intensive wash fluid. When you pull the stalk for a normal wash, it sprays the mixture from the big tank. If you use the button for the intensive wash, it sprays some of the intensive fluid from the small tank first followed by loads from the big tank so to use the intensive wash you need both to be filled. hope this helps.

I agree with Dave. I always just push the button on the end of the stalk to clean my screen. Ever since the intenssive clean bottle became empty, the has been no initial squirt before teh wipers moved, like there used to be
