Yes I started him with the Mantas (the black one was Mine) and the first XR4X4 was mine, shame I can't switch him to BMW. He has this strange thing about his Subaru that has eaten 1 engine and 1 turbo so far!!! and mus be due a gearbox soon.

I'm 34 and currently on my third Beemer.

Started off with a silver E36 318i (which anyone who watches Coronation Street would have seen a few months ago being driven through a fence by that gunman who was chasing Steve McDonald - I had it on Ebay and Granada bought it !!!).

Fancied somthing bigger, so got a E34 525i SE (which is still sat on my drive, till I get round to selling it). I then got a chance to buy my E39 540iA quite cheaply, and I'm sooooo glad I did buy it, as it's the best car I've ever had.

No old man here !!

Well I'm on to my second e28, bought the first one just over a year ago. Traditionally bought by middle aged businessmen who play golf, I'm cruising around in a big leather armchair on wheels while all my mates tear around in Saxos and Corsas. I turned 24 a couple of months ago, but I reckon I'm an old man before my time! As Terry Wogan once said, 'Slow and steady wins the race'. That's my philosophy anyway.

Well I was 21 and 5/6ths when I bought a Vauxhall Senator CD 3.0i 24v.  My mate joked about that I should have a tartan rug on the back seat until he was a passenger in the car and saw its performance!

It had previously been owend by two guys in their 50's.  But it had the performance of a car owned by folk considerably younger.

I was 26 when I bought my E39, I'm now 27 1/2.

Well I am 39 but about 16 in mind.

I have owned 3 5 series since last year & love em.

At the end of the day if you worry about stigmatisms that other people attach to cars you will miss out-ignore them & do whatever you want-you cannot drive a better car pound for pound than a 5 series (get a sport if you can)

Well I was 42 when I got my E34 & 46 when I got the 635. Presently 48 (on the outside) but about 28 on the inside!

Don't think a 5-series is an old mans car at all. A more mature mans maybe . . .

On the subject of Opel Mantas I used to have a 1900 Manta Luxus, one of the last produced before the Cavalier shape came out. I loved it. Rebuilt it from the ground up but it was burnt out in 1983.

Here it is circa 1982.

Ignoring the grille, does anyone else notice the similarity between the front end & that of a E9 CSI/CSL? Look at the line of the wings & bonnet etc.

Manta B&C's are great looking cars. I like the coupe shape better. I had a tatty Cavalier coupe 16 years ago, which I put the Manta C dash in. Was a fun car until a jeep crashed into the back of it up Annfield Plain.
I was a bit startled to see the back seat come forward and the petrol tank right behind me! Maybe I'll buy a Manta one day (if there's any left).

Cheers,

Shaun

Though it all boils down to the walnut dash ive been told, so get rid of that and then your young again...

what replacements can you get for the walnut dash? peer pressure, im only 24 and now i old...desperate measures...

Oooh, nasty modifications. I love the claims about the LED replacement bulbs - '15 times brighter than the equivalent filament bulb' - I've been researching these for years, and none give a suitable intensity to fulfil this claim. Besides, the brightest ones are only bright over about 6 degrees, meaning viewing from the side is useless. This also means the light appears as a single point, not across the whole reflector like a filament bulb does.

though they know the young ones as when you only put a tenner in an empty tank and then conk out on the 4court b4 leaving, they know that you cant afford to run it....Well thats me anyway, i hate filling it right up, i like to go to the cheap petrol stations then fill up..

Does anyone know any pics of alternative dash (walnut, birch, oak etc) cheers

I dont think they are old man's car's and anyone who says that are only jealous!

I have noticed a pattern in our answers we are all between 25-30yrs(with only a few being the exception! )

What does that mean then?

28, soon to be 29... think I'm getting too old for my E34 now, tempted to upgrade to a more sensible car... E39 530i sport in silver with black leather and aluminium trim should do it nicely!

Oh, dear.

Oh, dear.

It looks like either nobody else is admitting it, or else I really am the
oldest poster on this thread. Ahem.      I am 49 (just),   but I can
assure you I feel like 18 on the inside. . . . . .

To be quite honest, a couple of years ago I bought an old Fiat X 1/9,
similar to the first car I ever owned.   It felt just as good as ever, zipping
along the country lanes, but quite soon I started to realise that I could no
longer ignore the noise levels and feeling of vulnerability.    Definite sign
of age.    Now, I think my E39 is the bee's knees.   Much more GO than
the X 1/9, and comfy, too.

Now then, where are my slippers. . . . . .

When I was at uni a couple of years ago, one of the first year's was driving around in a brand new (at the time) e39 520i, this guy was clearly 17 and a reasonably new driver as he spent most of the time lighting the tyres and going sideways whilst looking terrified. Turns out the car was bought by a rich dad for his son going off to uni, while the rest of us either walked (me) or drove things like fiat pandas. I thought he was a flash git, and he was fairly smug and self opinionated.

When I went to uni I had my Dad's Audi S8 Bi Turbo for seven weeks (he slipped a disk)... Went down well with all the girls at freshers. Got off to a flying start compared to all the other young guys!

(I'm eternally grateful to that TV he tried to pick up and the resulting slipped disk)

The S8 was black with the 19 inch wheels and the alloy mirrors, it sounded like a jet engine when you took off. Everyone knew I was in the area and being four wheel drive I survived to tell the tale. If it was an Alpina B10 Bi Turbo I wouldn't be here today!

my first bmw was at 19 ( a 318I E30 ) when I went to see my older brother at UNI I got chatting to girls in his group of friends, Jo in particular. We were getting on really well when she asked me What I had studied when I was at university. only then I realised she thought I must be older than my brother doing the job I had at the time and driving a BMW. made me warm and tingly inside. Then I made her warm and tingly inside, but that is for another forum

So yes, the BMW does seem to "mature" you at a certain age. Now in my early 30's I think its about right. Still smacks of above average success as its not a mondeo, but it does not say, "cockney wide boy trader" or other such stimatisms that my Audi TT seems to attract.

I won't miss it when its gone.. or the bills...

37 now ..and loving 5 series owner ship after doing all the RS Turbo,Cosworth, imprezza type stuff..

Hats off to you guys in your 20's who are wise enough to go for a 5 series..

Slightly off topic but when my bro was a soldier in his early 20's he bought a private plated E34 535, anyway, after a fewweeks of ownership he was dragged into an office to have his post opened infornt of him because they suspected he was involved in "bad practices" IE they thought he was taking/selling drugs..and the reason for this?

Just because he had the BMW...

LOL me and my friend were pulled by the police a few years ago. He had a bog standard white E36 316. When we asked why we were stopped the copper said it had been radio'd in that 2 skinheads were driving around in a BMW and therefore must be up to no good!!

I thought it was the style police because the beemer was sporting plastic wheel trims!

In my opinion, if you have a bmw, you don't get old because they really are a drivers car that have the performance and handling to satisfy the 'boy' (or girl not wanting to leave women out!!lol) within us all! Old mans cars are the Mercedes Benz! I've driven many more of these than beemers (as part of my job, not entirely out of choice!) and they may have the luxury, but in no way can they match the agility and performance of a proper german car!

I have had the BMW bug for about 6 years now. I had an e 28 525e which was immaculate and only cost me a waterpump in 2 years. Many may say old mans car but all I got called was a pornstar!

My next was an e34 530iSE with 17" momo alloys and Schnitzer body kit and suspension. All I got called then was a drug dealer!

I now have the best car I've ever driven. My pride and joy is another e34 - 540i touring with M bodykit and suspension, fully loaded and with 6 speed manual. A car which an old man would struggle to handle I think!

Anyway, I'm 27 and still firmly believe myself to be 18 and probably will be for many years to come! especially as long as I have my 540!

Regards

Mike

I bought my E39 528i SE Steptronic in September '05. I'm now 26 years old....I thought I was the youngest E39 driver ever...but obviously not!

I was after a comfy car that could do long journeys in comfort, and with the most 'pimping' interior available in a car for 5 grand available I think I've achieved that!

I also get the old man jokes from my mates, calling it a "tartan rug battle cruiser" an other 'amusing' phrases, but all of them that have been for a ride in it have been well impressed by how luxurious and silent it is. They then stop taking the mick, and go back to their Jap supercars that are tuned to the point that they blow up monthly!

Back again people...I forgot to say how impressed I was first time I put it in Sport mode and stamped the throttle through both kickdown stages at 80mph (on a track of course..lol!). I was AMAZED at how hard it pulled though to the road running out. These cars are serious Autobahn burning machines, if a bit sluggish round town with an Auto box.

Nowadays, I pootle around at 55mph in Sport mode, waiting for somone in a Corsa / Saxo to try and overtake, before I hit the kickdowns and blow his doors off. This car has serious mid-range, and its only a 'six-pot'

Genius! Respect to anyone still cruising around in a Skoda Estelle. The Rapid 120L coupe is most definitely the poor man's 911.

Under the bonnet of my chevette is a bog standard 1256 pumping out a wholesome 55bhp, it's just the golf GTi in question had a massive sound system and huge bodykit, meaning it weighed slightly more than the moon. It was still a very satisfying victory.

I thought I was the only man alive who had ever compared the Skoda 136 rapide coupe to the Porsche 911. (I know you said 120L but its just a generational thing... mine is the big bumper model like the 964 porsche).

I'd love to have one of those now. They are not that cheap you know! a good air cooled rear engine coupe from the eastern block. What could be more fun?

Erm water cooled, but still good fun and when setup right they handle well. If you leave the early type swing axle rear end in you get some real fun lift off rear steering for hairpins good for road rallying.

At this rate I will get barred (firstly talking about Manta's then Skoda's even though they are both cool cars ) So how good would a 318 E36 be for Road Rally's??? and before you mention 325's ect it must be 4 pots. Can they be tunned. I don't want to ask on the 3 series section as they will say that they would be ace.

ah.... well if you are going to be picky...

It would have to be a 318is and I'm not sure how tunable they are. certainly there will  be many lighter faster 4 pots out there...

tell me more about the risks of drystone walls though... took 20 ft out of one in a 205 gti back 1993 and then flew 281ft landing bonnet to bonnet on an Astra coming the other way. backfliped and ended up on the roof. walked away from it but it gave me a healthy regard for dry stone walls!

A 318is is a good starting point. I've never driven one but in e30 circles they are highly valued, often fetching as much as a good 325i. Something to do with smaller engine - less power but less weight - better handling, apparently makes for a sweeter driving overall package than a 325i. Know a few guys who have had one and really sang their praises.
