Anyone give tips on changing the ATF in a 5-speed E34?

Haynes advise you have it done at a dealer, but I want to do it myself if possible. I recently cooked it on a motorway, and I feel it will need more than one change :)

OK Buckslad, Heres the layout..
Early versions were equipped with a dipstick. On later Models this was eliminated.

On Cars without an ATF level dipstick, it is recommended that the ATF level checking be left to authorised BMW dealer with the appropriate temperature measuring equipment. The most accurate check of the ATF level is best done on a lift with the engine running in neutral and the ATF at a specific temperature..
You could still do the job if you have a hydraulic lift available as the car must be level when refilling, and the ATF at a temperature of 30-55c (86-131F).
Place the transmission in neutral and start the engine. With the ATF at the specified temperature, add ATF until it spills from the filler hole..

Happy ATF

thanks, as I suspected, very similar to the VW procedure, which is decribed in the Haynes manual. I think the knack will be to replace as much fluid as comes out when I drain it. That should be near enough!

I'd leave it to a dealer......the problem is getting the oil back in. Also, you need a special oil for the 5 speed autos. If you live anywhere near Essex/Kent, I recommend Hornchurch Automatic Transmissions on 01708 440308. He knows these units inside out and can do an oil and filter change for about £70 (from memory!)
